increase "detail shadow" distance?
So ive got shadow distance at max. works fine for things like shadows cast by buildings

However, the more detailed parts of a building, like the overhang of the roof, or the shutters on the window, also cast shadows onto the building itself. These shadows seem to have a very close detail range. As soon as you step maybe 10 feet away, they get replaced with less detailed shadows.

Anyone know how to increase the distance (LOD) of these types of shadows? Id rather they either always stay lower res rather than having them "pop in" as I get closer.

It looks like shadows more than ten feet away suffer from the same issue Skyrim's shadows did--they look crappier the higher your max shadow distance is.
I've been fiddling with the .ini files for a good while now, and the best solution I can offer is to turn down your shadow quality so the pop-in is less noticeable.
Definitely not an ideal solution, I know. Hopefully, someone will figure this out soon.

change in the fallout4prefs.ini

iDirShadowSplits=1

that will keep it at the low res version all the time.

Medium setting =2, high+ultra =3
ie more than 1 split

I wonder if fBlendSplitDirShadow=48.0000 does something here

I know this post is getting old, but it's the only thing I found when searching this topic, so I'll put this here.

I can confirm that changing the vale of "fBlendSplitDirShadow=" can fix the shadows suddenly changing quality. There seems to be very little FPS hit, if any. Values above 1024 don't seem to increase the effect.

I didn't notice any fps loss going up to 768. At 1024 I lost 1 or 2 FPS.

fBlendSplitDirShadow=1024.0000

Does increasing fblendsplitdirshadow to 1024 do anything if you are using iDirShadowSplits=1?

or is it designed to be used with shadowsplits set to 2 or 3?

Mate. If you increase that. Be prepared for an FPS tank.

as per the person who suggested it, up to 768 he noticed no framerate hit. At 1048, he said he lost 1-2 fps.

Ill give it a shot and see.

Looks like fBlendSplitDirShadow just smooths the transition from low to high. There is no sudden jump any more at 768. Thus there is no performance impact.

This is exactly right. The value does not increase the distance at which high detail shadow is displayed - it only smooths out the transition between split 1 and 2 (a lot!), making it virtually unnoticeable at 768 with zero performance loss. Why fBlendSplitDirShadow wasn't set higher to begin with is beyond me, but hey, it's Bethesda.

Justified necro to confirm this information for anyone interested, since this thread is the first Google search result for that particular issue ;)
