Is it safe to store items in self-built containers?

I'm not sure, but you can store things in the settelment warehouse. Transfer your items into the Power Armor/Weapon/Armor/Cooking stations inside a settlement. Those items can then be used at all stations in that area. You can even store weapons and armor. Then you can get a Perk, Local Leader, that lets you connect two areas so that the storage is shared between both areas.

I stored some of my items in a safe I placed. It's still there. A buddy also said that everything he had put in his crates was still there after a few days.

I'm pretty sure everything in settlements is permanent, while stuff in the next cell over is dumped every few days. I've had areas reload, but my stash is still intact.

Um... so I thought this was the case, but I just witnessed a random scraggly looking old man in my settlement run into my bedroom, open my safe, grab a missile launcher, equip it, and run back out.

Any idea if there's a container we can build that settlers can't steal from? I know I can get it back from him, but what a pain to keep tabs on everyone.

They'll use your power armor as well. Take the core out of your suits or you'll see one of them using it.

And yes, settlers will use other gear but it's pretty rare when they do (or at least has been for me other than my PA). A settler with a missle launcher though? Yeah, just stay out of the way if he starts using it.

You might be able to build a chest on one of your roofs and build a ladder to prop up on the building to get on top of it. When you leave, store it until you need to use it again. (May need to build a floor up there first...not sure, though. I can build stuff on my houses, but most are custom.)

I don't think NPCs can get on top of buildings without a path up, so that could be a pretty quick way to store stuff safely. If you really wanted, you could probably also put one of the spawn doormats up there so when you port into your settlement, you're already by your chest.

Yes, it is.

Simple solution, build a floor for yourself and seal it of (put a piece of floor on top of the stairs).

I've had settlers spawn past my barricades (barricaded my bedroom so they wouldn't sleep in my bed), and settlers that somehow made it on to the roof of some of the buildings.

So far, all my self created containers have kept all my gear safe.

You can just store everything in the craft stations themselves. Just walk up to one and press R to transfer then you can just dump anything in there and as far as I know there's no limit. I picked up almost everything I can so far and just fast travel back and forth and just dump all my junk and everything else I don't want. It'll be shared between all crafting stations for that specific settlement.

On a side note, I placed a bit of junk I've collected in my house to decorate my it a bit. Several items has gone missing. I'm not sure if it's due to crafting or theft. Any ideas?

If your really paranoiod, you could build a cube with no doors or windows and a container inside, then just tcl through the wall. that should keep those thieves out.

Btw, is it safe to move self-built containers with something inside?
I have a bunch of boxes next to each other where I store and sort things by item type: Weapons, weapon mods, armour and clothing, non-essential quest items, etc. No issues so far.

Yes, I think so. I tried placing found vases on some tables, pool balls on my billiard table, a globe on a shelf, etc, and it was fine for a day or so, but then the things started gradually clipping through the stuff they were placed on, finally clipping even through the floor units I built. I suspect if you remove the floor in the editor you'll find your things underneath it.
