This, it isn't a god mode item or 'instant win button' like all the salty sailors think it is. It's a vehicle. You treat it like one, the cells are rare in the beginning and its a rusty piece of junk. It's pretty much a asset that has limited use until later when you got access to more cells by that point you are likely fighting crazy OP super mutants or something.
I thought it was early too until I realized the armor falls apart or runs out of energy really fast and needs regular upkeep and maintenance to properly function, thus making it okay in my books.
I always find it's easier to explore without it so far.
Companions and doorways, just hair ripping potential. A nice challenge without dogmeat killing everything while I hide away looting then for him to get in the way and [Insert more rage].
