Possibly killed a important character

I just killed a man named Gruel. Is he a good guy or a bad guy ? is he hostile aginst you no matter what or is he crucial to a quest ? Im asking cuz i think i shot at him by accident and then he just shot back. He was extremly hard to kill but i still did it. I can't seem to find anything about him on the internet so i would like to try out my luck here to know if i killed somone crucial to the story.

He attacked me first so I killed him. Had my gun out though but otherwise same as you not sure if he was important.

There are named raiders/gunners everywhere, as far as I know most of them aren't essential to a quest or the storyline. If they are, you will probably get a quest failed notification or they will simply fall down and get back up if they're an essential character.

I saw him 2-3 days ago. ID'd him in VATS from a long way off. Shot him.

Never had any repercussions as yet. Did exactly the same with Absalom.

The VATS info showed green for "not hostile" in both cases. If they'd seen me before I used VATS the info would have been red.

Wnen I am insituations like these I hard save first, then shoot, then look it up. I learned this the hard way. When I first played Skyrim I rolled back about two hours at one point. I saw a "wolf" near Dragon Bridge and put an arrow in it. Went to loot the corpse for the hide to discover it had a name..."Meeko". After I looked it up I felt such a jerk I rolled back to my last save. Felt really bad about killing the doggie.
