How to dismiss companion??
I have one of my companions, and i realized.. i don't really like wandering around with them, i even took the perk to up my DR and damage if i don't have one, but i can't for the life of me figure out how to make them go home, or leave me alone.

If you have Dogmeat then talk to him and say Stay, he will stay where he is until you go and get him

I have Codsworth, and when i fast travel somewhere he is automatically with me, how do I dismiss him?

Start talking with your companion choose talk then dismiss

I got it to work.

Several times though i tried talking to Codsworth and it wouldn't bring up the dialog to dismiss him. Weird!

I still have this issue. Seems worse since the DLC's got installed, no MODs here. I can't get the second Talk dialog wheel to pop.

Dialog wheel doesn't open for me either. But I managed to find a solution for this.
1 Open console.
2 Select the entity.
3 Copy and paste this: cf "actor.setcompanion" false false.

Necro'ing one thread is bad enough. Definitely no need to raise multiple long dead threads threads about the same thing.

The case is still valid. My version of the game has this problem and it was only after many hours of playing that I found a way to deal with that bug. Let the whole world know there is a way. :)

If they are an active companion, you will be able to send them to a settlement, or if you have none, back to where you found them in the map's locations such as Diamond City, Sanctuary, etc.

You don't need any console commands, unless your game is actually broken and you've messed with companion mods.

Once a character (with maybe a couple exceptions) are available and you pick them as your companion, even if you take them only for a few moments, you will be able to send them where you want them. Then you can go back to them if you want.

I think the issue is with the conversation options not coming up. I have the same; I have to re-try getting the talk option 3 or 4 times with my Companions before it comes up.

Are you running any companion mods or any mod that changes NPC behavior? Any dialog or UI mod? I mean, it could be anything, but more than likely just need to save, reload in most cases.

I suffer from the opposite problem. I have two companions using a mod. It quite often happens that when I click on either of them to issue a command, the talk options come up, but unfortunately, I've clicked say, what is normally 'trade' but instead I'm dismissing my companion. And it often sticks for a while even if I notice and back away and come back to them. I usually break it by commanding the other companion then returning to the first. Annoying though.
