it was a light weapon in every Fallout title so far; I guess it will be a non-automatic rifle (unless you mod it like crazy with weapon mods)

I would say non automatic rifle, and if its possible to mod it into a autoshotgun maybe the automatic perk as well.

Can't those types overlap? I mean, a non-automatic rifle can have a scope.

Anyway, non-automatic rifle is likely the proper answer, except for a Sawed-off which would be considered a pistol due to size.

Yeah I think everything can overlap depending on the attached parts, so like you said a sawed off might fall under the pistol range but it might lose the non automatic rfle class. But lets say a laser scattergun with a scope might fall under scoped rifles and non automatic rifles.

I would make an argument that non-automatic rifle and automatic weapon can't overlap for the obvious reasons, as well as a non-automatic rifle can't also be a pistol, neither can heavy guns.

If something like the Bozar, or light machine guns in general, makes the jump, it would likely be a heavy gun(and I am basing it purely on the fact it uses the Big Guns skill in Fallout 1 and 2), it begs the question if the Anti-Materiel Rifle would be a heavy gun or just a non-automatic rifle, because, well, it is a pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ big gun.

Well yeah the non automatic weapon class and the automatic weapon class can't overlap, neither can the Scoped Rifle and Automatic Weapon perks. For instance the 2nd and 3rd levels of the sniper perk don't effect automatic rifles, but the 1st doesn't say anything so it might effect scoped automatic weapons.

I don't know if a Bozar would be a heavy weapon but it might be classed as a automatic weapon since its more like a auto sniper then a lmg, I geuss it could be classed as a heavy weapon but that was a accident in Fallout 2. The .50 cal might fall under heavy weapons but I think it would be primarially a non automatic or scoped weapon depending on the mods equiped. The minigun might fall under heavy weapons and automatic weapons so the .50 cal might also be split between heavy and non auto.

Imagine a shotgun that could be co-classed as a heavy weapon though, like a Gattling Shotgun(drool) or something like the LMG style shotgun from Metro 2033.

Maybe skills are situational instead of weapon based, when you noscope it's non-automatic and when you use scope it's scoped.

And if you can switch weapons to single-fire it is used as non-automatic.
