Settlement Defence #2: The Sentry Gun Tower
was thinking about this
from videos, you can have at least 2 storey tall buildings in settlement
hopefully it can allow 3 storeys?

here's idea for a defencive point for settlement, you can put several of these around of course

1) start with a 3 storey tall tower put outside the settlement walls, say 20 ro 30 yards? or to guard a gate, or heck even INSIDE!
the top storey will have a platform and battlements for a guard, who should be armed with a long range weapon, sniper rifle, or epxlsoives like misisle launcher, OR just put sentry turrets up here as you see fit. Human/ghoul etc guards may have advantages over turrrets, a mix of people/turrets sounds good
note epxlosives when fire downwards, the splash damage from a miss is thus more likely to hit target by detonating near its feet, than firing flat horizontally as a horizontal miss may send it miles away over an enemies' shoulder!

2) at back of the tower, make a small building/shed built directly onto the tower, for a generator, this at the rear is more protected and can be reinforced to keep splash damage from explosives out
You need a power source, but an electrical cable to supply it run fomo the settlement itself, is eaisly knocked out, I'd fear, thus deactivating all the defences
need to check on how generators work for settlments?

keeping it at the back reduces risk of damage, lets you get to it easy to refuel etc
use roof of this generator shed as perhaps, another point for a sentry gun or sandbags for another guard
or part of the ramp/stairway up to the top, since yo'ull need some method of accesing the top of tower, either by a zig zagging ramp (see sentry towers in Fallout New vegas for how thta works), or you may used a simple ladder at the back or even inside the tower
OR
you could use it as where a walkway above ground level reaches out from your settlement buildings out to the tower!
with no ground level access to the tower itself, it makes it much damn harder for enemies to take out, but you'd need to build that walkway of course.
Rooftop acces to the generator hut therefor would make it even more secure

3) put lights on toof of tower to help sentries see at night

4) in the bottom storey, embed short range sentry turrets on front, left and right sides: flamethrowers, submachine guns or whatever, close to the ground they have shorter open firing space
in 2nd storey put long range weapons, as up high they get long arcs of fire
the FRONT one you could make if possible to fire explosvies, since firing down, good splash damage potential, and cannot fire into areas of your own base (unlike at the sides)
consider a turret or guard at rear as said on roof of generator hut to stop enemies coming round back

5) barbed wire or other things to slow/limit enemy advance, stop them getting in melee range easily.

6) place the turrets in the tower and then cover up as much of their bodies as you can that will not block their firing arcs, this is to stop splash damage etc hurting them
si you could maybe make a firing slit by placing two horizontal pieces of wood

7) AI enemies wil likely fixate on the tower defences first if the twoer is the first enemy they see, letting those in settlement engage them safer from afar
ie, keep you merchants and not so combat skilled NPCs at arms length

8) other defences like mines, natural lay of the land, putting up short walls/sandbags etc to force enemies into a circuitous long path to the tower etc can all help

just an idea :)

note the release video shows super mutant behemoth throwing some kind of power explosive device at the settlment in the clip. Was it a mininuke??
this shows why you want your sentry weapons either spread our so one AOE doesn't take out several, OR armoured by enclosures as I suggest for the tower ;)

You know,i was thinking a lot about what could be done with settlements, like, you could find more power armors in the game,u would then take it to the settlement where you would have like "power armor facility" that would some of the people that would be trained to use it take when there would be attack going on,or buildings that make stuff for you over time, lets say, power core for those power armors every real time hour and such. Just some ideas i got when i have hard time to fall asleep ^^

well you can put companions in charge of settlements, noidea if they can use power armour or like in other FO games if they being NPCs will be bothered by charge durations etc??
