Scrapping weapons

I could scrap 4 steel out of a pipe pistol with my previous character. I started a new one, and now I only can scrap one steel from a pipe pistol. The new character does have some different stats, but which would be the one governing this?

Scrapping weapons is heavily reliant on the mods they have on them. No stats vary what you get out of scrapping weapons. only the gun and mods on it, as well as ranks in the scrapper perk.

Early game pipe pistols have worse parts on them while late game a "pipe pistol" looted tends to have a better grip, barrel,reciver, etc thus making it worth more.

Even if you have the scrapper perks, this remains true.

No scrapper perks: Plain laser pistol = 4 plastic.
2 scrapper ranks: plain laser pistol = 4 plastic, 1 screw.

But with scrapper ranks an automatic laser pistol gets you fiber optics, crustal, cirtcuits, etc.

I got scrapper perk because I did a TON of customization of energy weapons and power armor. so scrapping all those institute lasers and low tier lasers random enemies have was my top source of fiber optics and crystal.

And if you are thinknig "well I can just use my water bottle farm's caps to buy shipments!" one shipment of 25 fiber optics for thousands of caps, isn't even enough fiber optics for a pair of arm stabilizer mods (use, arm stabilizer mods for armor want fiber optics).

If you don't care about energy weapons or power armor upgrades though, scrapper is almost entirly frivolous. Instead of just a luxury.

I'm talking about the level 1 character without perks and the basic pipe pistol. I was always picking these pistols because they provide 4 steel. But when I went to scrap a pistol I found in Sanctuary, it only gave 1 steel. The stats of my old character were IIRC (SPECIAL) 4-4-4-5-5-4-2 and the current character 3-3-4-6-6-3-3.

If neither of your characters had any ranks in the scrapper perk, and both characters are trying to scrap IDENTICAL weapons with the exact same mods (same barrel, same reciver, etc). Then that does sound like there is some kind of problem going on.

But special stats don't govern item scrapping. and if Im reading that right, your new characters has Better INT, which is the stat scrapper talent is in. So if stats actually mattered then your new character would get more. but they don't, so...

Found the cause, it was a mod I recently installed, Free Weapon Downgrades. It says nothing about affecting scrapping, but it does.

Please make reference to any mods you have installed the next time you ask a question; we all were trying to figure out (and focus in on) a non-existant cause.
