Making a Railroad "Heavy" Build
Does anyone have suggestions on how to make a new character into a good Railroad character?
I was thinking of completely avoiding the use of power armor but I'm not sure which perks are good for a purely on foot character

Is it worth investing points into stealth and heavy weapons?

Is it worth investing in the Charisma Perks to make Mutants and Robots on my side?

Sneak is powerful given that by default a sneak attack doubles damage, and you can drive that multiplier a fair bit higher... good for picking off enemies one at a time at relatively low risk.

If you align with the Railroad, you'll eventually want to max Armorer.

The early heavy weapons are either a bit inefficient (miniguns do terrible damage per shot) or heavy and w/ fairly rare ammunition (missile launchers). If you get a minigun with the 'right' legendary property, they can rock, but that's a big if. My character has reached level 45, IIRC, and has seen exactly one gatling laser in the entire game (which I handed off to a settler, because I'm going with Rifleman instead).

or get the gaussrifle. The heavies during the quest 'the battle for bunker hill' use this weapon. Its ammo is a bit hard to come by, but this thing is a beast.

As the only character that levels, do anything you want and by lvl 20 you'll be a heavy

Think Wasteland Elite 007 Assassin Commando. Thats kinda what the RR wants outa you.

You can clear most railroad quest on any build without the use of PA or specific perks.
To make it easier i would say stealth with a ranged silenced weapon but anything else can work as long as you got stealth and a weapon perk.

It depends on what you want heavy to mean. By the way they make it sound, their "Heavys" are the people who are brought in for the most difficult tasks. They don't really go into detail how they do it, and I assume each one has a different style.

First thing I'd do is use the console to give yourself a Railroad armored outfit. Easily the coolest looking armor in the game, and what Glory uses.

Then decide if you want to be like Glory, who is a guns blazing, go through the front door type, or like Deacon, who uses subterfuge and stealth.

To be like Glory, you'll want perks like toughness and whichever perk that increases your chosen weapon's damage. Strength and Endurance, too. And get some perks that make your bash more powerful, as well as explosives.

To be like Deacon, put more into Charisma and Agility, and get the perks that increase your persuasion and stealth capabilities.

Oh this is the exact type of post I was hoping for

(Sorry to everyone if I was rather unspecific. I wasn't sure how to word it.)

I think I'll build into Heavy Guns and Explosives then and go the Glory way. I liked the whole concept of an unstoppable synth going in Terminator style.

I liked the Power Armor but later in the game it made everything a cake walk. I'd like to have a drawn out gun battle where I didn't feel like the only thing I was waiting for was for them to peak.

Take a look at this mod. It retextures the railroad armor into a multicam, and it is gorgeous.

I gave my character a gruff beard and the shaved sides haircut, some patrolmen sunglasses, along with this armor he looks like a total badass.

If you go for heavy guns, definitely want to stick to strength and endurance. They have some great explosive and heavy guns perks. The explosive perk that adds the arch line is a godsend.
