Companion AI = suck
They should have made it so we don't have to walk into a companion or slap them around until they move out of the way. I've died so many times because companions have trapped me in a one door room with an explosive or giant beast. And sure, you can -command- them to go to a specific location, but that isn't efficient in a crisis situation. All newcomers should pick up the Lone Wanderer perk, for their own sake; or just tell their companion to wait outside whenever they go into a building.

Yep the AI is downright retarded in this game. Sometimes it can be funny though. I was in this one fight and Nick took cover on this little box that the enemy was also taking cover behind and they recreated that one scene from Naked Gun.

It was so great just watching them both lean out and shoot at each other with their pistols somehow managing to take cover right before each volley.

It doesn't seem like the AI is improving anymore with games. It appears as though we've hit a wall with how realistically behaving we can have the AI act. Such a shame. Devs too focused on visuals these days.

Their combat ability is questionable. I remember Boone & EDE in FO:NV would snipe mobs from range and were helpful. Preston isn't useful for anything.

To be honest I don't think I'd forgive Bethesda if they made decent companion A.I., the stupidness of the A.I. sort of adds to the charm for me :D

MacCready and Piper are sniper happy, though Mac tends to but hug worse than anyone hes still easier to shoot around than Strong or Danse. Honesly Mac is my favorite just because that perk is broken.

I hear Dogmeat works with Lone Wanderer which would make him pretty great, no moral judgement being another huge perk

AI sometimes trying to push me off the edge of the cliff!

I came here just now to write about exactly this. After being pushed into a mine for like the umpteenth time by my companions who lag behind then hit me from behind at ramming speed as they run to catch up.

There were a lot of apologists and rabid fanboys rallying to defend the game's engine when it was first shown but it's clear to me it has reached it's limit. Both in terms of graphics and it's AI capability. NPC's in general are just dumb as hell and it's infuriating. Enough so that I won't be buying the next big thing from Bethesda if it's gonna be like this. I can't justify this when the REDengine exists.

Agree. Fallout 4 companion AI sucks extremely. As much as I like Dogmeat, he always stands in my way and once even lost against a radroach... Seriously Bethesda?
Hope they improve it... Or mods do once.

In my opinion it is even worse.

We should differentiate between

a) independent AI like the one in this game
b) partially independent like in FONV
c) "programmable" AI like in DA:O

Point c) was already acceptable in NWN2 and reached it's peak in DA:O.
They showed us, what is possible.

The points a) and b) seem to suffer from the dev's ignorance.
Either they are incompetent or reluctant or both.

But most likely it's a question of (financial) ressources and a resultant list of priorities.
On this list the visuals are top and the AI (if it deserves that lable) the last after the last.

I for one would happily life with visuals like in NWN 2 or DA:O when I get a real AI for that.

I simply dont get it Bethesda have a good relationship with 2K games. Why for the ♥♥♥♥ sake they didnt borrow or bought off the companion AI script from them. Yes i ment on the very same script that was used for Elizabeth in Bioshock Infinite. That NPC is always with you and still its never, never, ever in your way. Wether during a gunfight or simple stroll it will never block your path or standing in front of gunpoint. And, yet it is always around ready to give you back up at any time. Why for the love of god they didnt copy paste with small alteration.

So I dismissed Curie to the Boston Airport settlement. After a day or two I go back. Somehow she got herself trapped in the storeroom behind the workshop.

She talks to me through the wall. : )

I noclipped in but can't get her out probably unless I take her back as a companion.

Oh well.

there's a mod to disable companion's collision so they don't stuck you. you go throught them.
