Nick Valentine can wear armor!*
*Sort of. He can only equip the Faded Trenchcoat, which he already has equipped. This is useful as the Faded Trenchcoat can be upgraded with ballistic weave.

Here's Nick's Default DR.

And here's Nicks Upgraded DR.

And here's proof that it can actually be equipped.
As a side note, you don't get the trenchcoat he's currently wearing in his inventory. I guess he just absorbs the new one.

Now I just need to know how you got Combat Armor that looks like that. Mine are just little pieces of plastic stuck to your body, and it doesn't look like armor in the same way it does there. I've seen this thicker looking combat armor around but I can never figure out how to get it.

There are three different versions of the four main armor types out there, Normal, Sturdy, and Heavy. You start getting the better versions when you get to higher levels, or start facing higher level enemies. I found my first Heavy Combat Armor pieces off of the gunners in vault 95.

It's this. Sadly there is no major visual improvements for the lesser tiers of the armors though (when you modify them that is).

Weird. I thought those were just prefixes from mods, like Pocketed etc. All the more reason to dislike the whole, every mod changes the name feature. This XXX Combat Armor is just from mods, but THIS XXX Combat Armor is actually a different kind entirely! Dumb.

The only way you can really tell is by wearing ones you start to find at higher levels every now and then, or looking to see what they look like on the enemy before you loot it.

Yes, but he can't equip any other clothing items.
