But for what it's worth, supply lines don't completely teleport items for you -- you can't deposit items in one workshop and expect to pick them up from a workshop in a different settlement. You can craft with the resources (if they're resources or junk items; armor and weapons will not automatically be scrapped for resources whether local or remote), but you can't pick up the item.

So if you store a massive pile of raw meat in one workshop, you should be able to craft cooked meat at a cooking pit in another settlement and the results will be dropped in your inventory. You couldn't, however, pick up the raw meat from that other place.
I have planted 18 mutafruit, 12 corn, 12 tatoes, and 200 water.
I always come back to 101 water, and a mix of tatos and corn. So I guess my 17 settlers at sanctuary (I've had 10 Charisma for ages and no more come. IT gave me 17 at 6 charisma), so apparently my settlers are REAL thirsty, and only like to eat tatoes.
EDIT: For reference, I don't have supply lines or the supplier perk.
i wouldn't have recognize it, if i haven't miss the 150+ cooked dog meat...
for the records, i have several settlements on 20, some on 19, 18 and so on...
I personally often make a Chest or Safe next to the Workshop and keep some Aid/Food items and spare Power Armour parts in there. Note that Settlers can 'steal' from the Container, if it contains something they really want (eg. a weapon is in there and the Settlement becomes under attack, etc).
IIRC, Settlers will utilize Food/Water from the local Workshop, then use/askfor Food/Water from the connected Workshops/Settlements (if there isn't enough in the local Workshop to feed everyone). They really like clean Water and Tatos (which 'tend to go first'). HTH
