Killing Maxson in the game simply turns the BoS hostile, even during that quest.
Extended Answer (spoilers for the Blind Betrayal quest):
The option would've apparently been available (if it wasn't cut from the game) after sparing instead of killing Danse. You'd have been able to go back to the Prydwen with him because, according to what Haylen said to him, a lot of the BoS members still believed in Danse and would stand behind him if he returned, despite the fact that he's a Synth. On the Prydwen, he'd challenge Maxson's authority and you'd settle the matter in combat. By killing Maxson at that point, you'd take over and become the new Elder of the BoS.
