Disabling shadows completly broken
Hi!

I tried boosting my fps on my pc using this tutorial: https://youtu.be/BgEqfzb6Qfg

It worked like a charm and boosted my ingame fps from ~25fps to around 40-50 fps. Its very good and all but now my shadows have gone haywire, to be more specific: when im traveling outside. If i'm somewhere inside then everything works perfectly. Here's a clip where I captured of the problem: https://youtu.be/wU9NgG_2Mgw
Changes to my game include everything that is described in this video, only excaption is that in addition to what is descibed in the video, I additionaly have changed in the Nvidia control panel --> manage 3d setting the maximum pre-rendered frames to 4 and the pwoer management mode to prefer maximum performance.

I would love to waste 3-4 hours (slow computer = game loads up quite some time) pinpointing the esxact source of this problem, but i figured maybe someone else has dealt with this problem. So thats why I'm asking here.

You could try disabling ambient occlusion if it's enabled.

Following guides like that can have weird effects like that since it involves changing settings that aren't always meant to be changed.

If you did everything written in that guide my first bet would be the absurdly low shadow map resolution or removing the light source if you did that part.

Guide says: Find 'iShadowMapResolution=2058' and change '2058' to '8' and to disable shadows.

8 is pretty crazy low regardless of how bad your FPS is, the minimum I would set is 512 and turn shadows back on. Maybe 256 if I was really hurting for performance.

Also some people have reported physics glitches and other strange behavior from removing the FPS cap, iPresentInterval but that doesn't always mean you'll see it.

If none of that fixes it, reset it all back to default follow the guide excluding and changes to shadows or lighting. If you still need more performance, then perhaps make the shadows changes one at a time and then load the game up to help track which setting causes the problem.

Yeah BoogieMan,
I was about to start fiddling with shadow map resolution values when i saw your comment and you were right. I changed to 512 and shadows went back to normal with small fps decrease. Then I changed to 256 and all shadows still were as they were with 512 or 2048, but fps increased slightly.

So, thanks for your reply. In the end the fix was very simple...
Now I can finally go back to harrasing locals in Commonwealth.
Have a nice day!

I'm not going to watch those videos, but in case you don't know about this mod, you should try it out.

Why Max Pre-rendered frames to 4?

well when i hover over that dropbox/section it says:"Increasing this value can result in smoother gameplay at lower framerates". It sounded like something that would benefit my gameplay.

Ahh ok. I was just wondering if that was like some widely known thing to help performance in this game and I had just missed it? lol That's why I ask. I just recently changed that Max Pre-rendered Frames to 1 and it seemed to help a bit. I might try 2,3 & 4 now too though.
