My latest play-through is as a female Chinese sleeper agent, sent to the United States to spy and collect data on the United States during the Sino-American War. A Chinese male agent is my "husband", while an adopted male infant (Shaun) is our fake son.
This scenario works so well on so many different levels. The best fun being what would my character's objectives be? What faction(s) would I support? What faction(s) would I go out of my to destroy? It gives the player the ability to play with a detached objectivity missing from the original game.
Unfortunately she started out well but has slipped into being nice to certain people. And even when she IS mean they all respond positively towards her so I then feel kinda guilty. lol

Project Valkyrie: It opens up a ton of new options regarding end-game faction relations and is probably the most essential as far as changing up the game to allow new character builds. There are also new ways to move the BoS away from the Nazi vibe back to the Capital Wasteland style Brotherhood. By the end of the game you get to leave all the factions alive, kill all of them, or anything in-between. It also adds some great new quests, characters, companions, factions, and locations. It's worth mentioning that there are two additional mods by the same author, and they all fit very well together. The other two are Fusion City Rising, and Outcasts and Remnants. These are also really good, but I mentioned Project Valkyrie in particular because of the completely game-changing choices that it makes available.
Start Me Up: This one is pretty much essential for a good roleplay run. There are probably other similar mods out there, but this is the one I like. As soon as you're done with the physical character creation in the bathroom mirror you are given the option to play the into as normal (This is a memory, let's stay here a while), skip it and wake up when Kellogg enters the Vault (This is a memory, I don't want to relive this), or create your own roleplay start (This is only a dream, I need to wake up). If you choose the roleplay option you are then given choices for your background that include everything from generic occupations like caravan guard or farmer, to more specific ones like an Atom Cat or Enclave Remnant. You will choose where your character starts on the map, how many supplies they have, and what level they start as. If you want you can also select traits, like in previous Fallout titles. These are the ones that were almost always some sort of trade-off that made roleplaying more interesting. If you want to play as a sniper for instance, it would make sense to get the Trigger Discipline trait which gives you a 20% bonus to ranged accuracy at the cost of a 20% slower rate of fire. Just as important for roleplaying as the alternate start, is that this mod also changes dialogue options in the game based on the character you create. You can still perform the vanilla main quest, but you're just looking for a random kid, not your own, and the dialogue reflects that.
Fallout UIF: This one may or may not make sense depending on the type of play through you want to have. It can also cause crashes for some users because of how many NPCs it adds in certain areas and how much that stresses the engine. I've just made a habit of quicksaving whenever I hear a vertibird because there is always one present at these main UIF fortifications where crashes are most likely to happen. It's only caused a couple crashes for me so far and I've had some really intense battles (including a recurring assault on the Cambridge Police Station seemingly whenever I fast travel there). The UIF adds a fifth main faction to the game which apparently lends itself well to playing as an evil character. I say apparently because they are introduced to the game as an adversary of the Brotherhood and have followed them to the Commonwealth from further south. I've only recently downloaded this mod and I'm currently playing as a Brotherhood soldier, so I haven't actually played through any of the UIF quest line, but I have killed a bunch of their soldiers. I'm including this mod in my recommendations because people don't like how the vanilla game basically forces you to be the "good guy". This mod changes that. It also adds an interesting new faction to be at war with if you don't want to go the evil route, especially for a Brotherhood play through. They wear black and red and have some sweet looking custom-skinned armors and great weapons which have found a permanent place in my inventory.
But yeah, in order to really roleplay Fallout 4 effectively you need to use mods. These are just my suggestions, but you should first decide what sort of play through you want to have and then find mods that will lend themselves to it. Like I said, I'm currently a BoS soldier, so on top of these three mods I have a bunch of new energy weapons and armors, and improvements for using power armor. I've also added new companions (and choose existing ones) based on whether their ideologies mesh with my character's. Since I'm in the Brotherhood, I also decided to include mods in my play through that add Enclave remnants, the UIF, and other enemies in order to add more variety to my game, even if I don't plan on joining those factions or doing the quests that they offer in my current run.
