In the settlement work-shop, you can look at items to see what they break down into.
You can also tag them to have a "magnifying glass" highlight on them to show its a component that you need. Also, I think the "scraper" perk will also highlight objects in game if they will break down into tagged components.
Also, Junk will break down automatically in the workshop- no need to scrap them yourself.
Guns/Armor will need to be scrapped manually.
Keep an eye out for aluminum and copper as well, very important.
just put it in the workshop inventory via option "store all junk"
whenever you want to craft something .. these junk items will be converted into raw materials
As for material sources ceramic is a little hard to find; but mugs, ash trays, and bowls are one of the best sources.
You can get steel by breaking down literally every gun that isn't an energy weapon. Steel is literally the easiest material to come across considering that 80% of the nemies in the game have or wield things that give you steel when you scrap them at the appropriate bench.
Don't do this.
Just put them in your Workshop. they'll be scrapped as needed.
Ceramic is a pain in the ass. Dont really know a good place to farm them.
the junk shop in Diamond city sells ceramics. They sell them at day with the lady, AND at night with the mister handy.
You don't even need a slave farm to afford it because oh thank god, ceramics (and plastic) is one of the cheaper shipments you cna buy.
Save up about 1,000 caps, go to diamond city, and buy 50 ceramics.
Edit: Oh, and strip crappy weapons for steel.
