So I just heard a random sound effect and I don't know why

Kinda like a dramatic gong-ish sound like what crime shows play when some big twist gets presented or someone gets ambushed, but I have no idea what could have possibly prompted it. I was just kinda walking down the street, looting Super Mutant meat sack things when it happened and quite frankly I'm kinda worried that some Super Chameleon Deathclaw Behemoth Matriarch or something is about to burst from the ground or that the Mysterious Stranger is gonna cap me or something. Does anyone know what could have prompted it or was it just my game being weird? I'm by Shaw High School if it helps.

I would get random chime sounds, higher pitched gong sounds whilst out and about. Never seemed related to anything from my experience. Once heard the sound of a "Plane" coming in hot and crashing over sanctuary, but no visible sign of jet wash, debris, or impact explosion. This was well before BoS made their flashy entry to boston.

Im not going to spoil it too much, but the sounds you heard are "visitors" that crashed...
Look to the east, not far from Oberland Station, and you'll find the crash site.

The plane sound you heard, is probably the UFO Crashing. I actually watched that thing zip over my head & crash off in the distance.

One of the gongs (the one with the bass thump) is the crit notice.
Another is the killing blow, usually followed by the cash register.
Then there's the clover gong, for when your crit filled the crit meter (has the 4-leaf clover show up.
The last one I can think of, is the Reaper Sprint trigger, that refills your AP on a VATS kill (has the reaper showing up for a few seconds).

I can't think of more right now, I may have missed some. ^_^

Thanks for the heads up on those darn pesky aliens. I went to check it out but it's still vacant. I'll do some more investigating later. But most of those odd fx sounds and instrument noises are when I'm out and about wandering and having no interaction with anything other then the environment. I believe that was the same case as OP but I'm not sure

I just got the exact same sound effect, and this is the only post I can find related to what I heard. I killed a random trader and ate her corpse about 10sec before I got the sound. I was a little north west of Jamaica Plains on the way to the radio tower.
So maby this game actually has something like bad Karma, and I'm beeing evil? But I'm already 72h into the game (2. playthrough), and this was the first time I ever heard enything like it.

With maxed reaper and clover, all i hear ever battle are those 2 sounding off constantly... really have to find a way to dial those sounds down, it's deafening after a while.

Bother reaper and clover are pretty loud, at least clover triggers a little less, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, they need to rescale the audio some, every time it starts triggering, i start regretting getting it, i play with a headset, it gets painful in longer fights.

Indeed, I reduced the overall effects volume, but now I can barely hear my gunfire (which makes strong and me sad)

Someone suggested those earlier and I forgot to reply. I don't have either of those perks at all, but even if I did I simply wasn't in combat. There weren't even enemies NEARBY! Literally all I did was loot a gore bag.

I was by Shaw High School, like I said, which is just up the road from Jamaica Plains so I'm wondering if there's some kind of event that triggers there that I/we/the wiki just hasn't found yet.

I had this same thing happen somewhere outside egret tours marina. I have no perks that make any noises like that, i found the ufo a long time ago. It was deafeningly loud, sounded like a dramatic loud jumpscare noise of some sort. I have no clue what caused it, it was really really bizzare.

That's also where I heard it. I fast travelled to Jamaica Plain and walked in Sanctuary's direction then heard this random eerie sound.
