drop the 50's - 60's theme
Anyone else finds that Bethesda over exaggerates and overuses the theme?

Black isle's theme was visually subtle, mostly cars and drawings. Tactics was even more modern and more believable.

Then came Bethesda with f3 and overblown this 50's ♥♥♥♥♥♥ crap theme which is ugly as ♥♥♥♥, unimpressive and totally unimmersive.

Is their target audience grandpas and weirdos?

I think, had the war not taken place in 2077, it would be far more believable (I know this is a fictional world) and interesting had the prewar world been an advanced version of the 1950s or possibly the 70s due to a few key events that happened in our timeline not happening in their timeline. A timeline where they achieved technology decades ahead of us, such as A.I, the public use of the internet, cryogenic sleep, ect. but with a retro twist to it all.

Maybe a story where the government spent an astronomical sum of money including underground networks (the vaults) to sustain civilization as well as the war effort in case of an emergency into the U.S infrastructure plan, but the completion of the project was cancelled somewhere in the 60s or 70s and deemed a bad investment, therefore leaving some vaults such as Vault 13 unconnected from the underground networks. Much of the technology and living quarters in the fallout shelter sections were frozen in the (advanced) 50s. The underground networks were used later for commercial, emergency dispatch, and occasionally military logistic purposes. When the nuclear war began somewhere in the 60s or 70s, people took refuge in the dated vaults or in the main vault network.

Reportedly, after the bombs fell, the government via radio tried to rest everyone assure that everything was going to be alright and America will come back stronger than ever. The radio just played 50s and patriotic music to calm people down when there were no announcements, but eventually the broadcasts went silent and people quickly knew things wouldn't be the same. The main vault network went in an uproar and lead to the mass exodus of the main vault's occupants, but some of the separate vaults such as 13 and 101 stayed locked in waiting for further instructions from the main vault. A few hundred years later, the game begins and you venture off into a world where the ruins are frozen in time but the new societies above are culturally and technologically progressing each in their own way.

I would imagine that cultures would still progress underground rather than stay in the same time period when everyone entered, so it would have been interesting to see the game show how other vaults matured in their own ways rather than stick with that nonsensical "Vault-Tech's whole purpose was to experiment on the survivors" route. I know plenty of people will disagree with this comment, that's all fine.

That does seem to be the case on the culture still progressing as some things seen in Fallout 4 that aren't pre war related tech don't look as 50s/60s themed. Would be interesting to see a fallout game farther in the future past 4 that shows more on how the general theme changed completely over.

You think doesn't cut it.

No, but Bethesda thinking so certainly does.

bethesda, black isle, obsidian and interplay.

the theme was prevalent in all mainline fallouts. one of the big complaints with tactics and bos from the fanbase was droping the retro future theme. the fallout bible none canon as it is also has avolone and the other black isle devs state fallouts suposed to be the 50's raygun gothic scifi. Vegas well adding a few generic ass looking modren style gun also kept the retro look so that basicly every Dev whose worked on it baring micro forte and whatever coke addled interplay morons decided stealing the balders gate dark alience engine to make a half assed cash grab well killing van braun was a good move.

Every year older that a thread is when you necro it, another baby Shaun dies. So whoever necro'd this thread from 2015, you just personally murdered 5 baby Shauns.

Your own baby son! You murdered him! Five times!

Bethesda also thought they should make ghouls look more 'clean' and less zombie like with the whole torn rotting flesh theme and just gave them shriveled tight wrinkling skin because "not realistic". These devs seem to think you can dose someone with radiation and they'll survive and live for hundreds of years...

And i disagree with them ruining ghouls by changing them.

ghouls having an extended life span was like the 1950s thing not bethesda but interplay as for what they look like well they look like burn victims which also fits with fallout 1 and 2. did you really need to necro a old topic to make some unfounded complaint?

I'm not a fan of that 50s-60s theme, either. But I'm generally not a fan of USA, either sry.

This necro thread reeks of "Stop liking things I don't like".

The aesthetics is all Fallout really has going for it (yes that includes the first two).

Really? I love the barter system and VATS. Fairly unique.
