Supply Lines, which way is best?
I tried to be clever with my supply lines. I chose to make supply lines between settlements such that the distance is short AND safe AND the provisioner is unlikely to get stuck on things (takes a road path).

Anywho, I'm curious if people decided to make supply lines radially from a single settlement, or if, like me, supply lines look like a constellation.

As far as I can tell, junk and food are distributed properly between settlements, but water is not working like food is.

If you want maximum productivity in all settlements, try to use only 1 settler per settlement as provisioner. Like A -> B -> C -> D and so on.

All settlers are "protected" so only you can kill them, and they have unlimited ammo. It also doesn't matter how long they take to travel, once you send a settler on the supply line you already have the full effect.

The only exception here is probably a bug (or poor game design), when they are targeted as quest giver for random Minutemen quests they temporarily lose the protected status and will most certainly die to anything.

Thanks for the clarifications!

Why one per settlement?

I like to have short travel distances because it increases the likely hood that while I am traveling I have an immortal provisioner with a large gun and unlimited ammo helping me out in an unexpected fight.

I keep up with my trade routes from the map with the trade route view so it's easy to know what is covered.

1 per settlement allows more people from the settlement to be tasked with something else. Depends if you're planning to build up settlements or not I suppose.

Yep if you for example run 5 supply lines with Sanctuary settlers, substract the "named" NPCs, there's not that many left to run your shops, food plants etc.

Each settlement should be connected to at least two others. Its *possible* to lose them (supposedly, I haven't heard anyone who has) and this prevents them from being cut off by any single loss.

Either way you'll have the same amount of provisioners total. Mine just aren't balanced to exactly one lost in each settlement but instead average to one lost per settlement because some have 0 lost and some may have 2 or 3 depending on what they are close to.

But in the play I'm doing I run around the waste with 17 charisma most of the time to try and help my changes with intimidate style perks so I may have a different view on how many are ok to sacrifice.

Same total amount, but settlers are a per settlement resource, so if you're planning to build up all or most of your settlements send out a bunch from one place isn't a great idea

If however you aren't going to build up many settlements, it doesn't particularly matter.
