I'm level 17. Is Strongback a worthwhile perk?
Or should I wait untill I get my final set of armor and add deep pockets to most of it?
Or none of the above?
How can I get the best out of carrying capacity the best way? Like using companions or perks or armor?

Yes due high lvl armors will be heavy.

Don't even bother w/ companion just get lone wonderer perk.

I found strongback very important, especially when you get the perk that lets you fast travel and use AP to run when you're encumbered

Because you can load up on a ton of stuff, fast travel back to base and dump it, and go back to what you were doing.

Companions also have a weight limit they can carry

Yes but would giving a companion deep pocketed armor be viable in any way?

Strong back is a great perk, even just the first two ranks are a big help. But if you have more things nescasary for your direct survival, get those first.

I mean things like Riflemanm, gunslinger, gun nut, Medic. Not "I want my 4th rank of sandman".

If you want a less perk intensive assistance for carry capacity, use Deep Pockets armor mods (needs armor crafting rank 2, but armor crafting is great).

Deep pockets is +10 carry per limb, +20 for the chest. When it comes to carry capacity, it ALWAYS beats out ultra light (even heavy polymer combat armor comes out a small bit ahead in net gains).

Deep Pockets is how I got by with my obsession carrying 8+ weapons and looting everything in sight when I had only 4 strength.

I honestly can't say if it works or not. You'd have to test it to see.

Stuff I've peeked at with wiki's claim all companions have a carry weight of 150, but it still feels like Codsworth can carry way more than Cait, for example. I dunno if that's real, or because human NPCs wear weapons and armor, etc.

EDIT: A more simple sum up. Get Strong back if it will help you with your desired "Always have it" loadout, not JUST for looting reasons. a 4 tube missile launcher weighs 40 pounds all on it's own, for example.

IMO, the best carrying capacity you can do is:

1) Deep pockets
2) Strongback perk
3) Get cait/preston as companion
4) Put companion on power armor
5) Mod power armor to increase weight capacity (i think it's calibrated shocks)

It's because deep pocket effects doesn't apply when you are in a power armor.
The + 100 carry capacity for lone wanderer is less than a companion + power armor will carry

Even if you don't like the companions (and I do like some of them a lot), I'd still want to get those companion perks. You can always be a Lone Wanderer, but it's a lot easier getting companion perks early when you have a bunch of quests to do.

Companions are great mules. Give them pocketed or ultra light armors, power armor or an empty frame even (they dont use up the fusion cores) and this becomes even better. Besides befriending them for perks and hauling junk, they can do quite the damage with good weapon, so I wouldn't resign from them.

edit:

It is important, you can command your companions to pick stuff up. Even when they are WAY over they carry limit and dont accept anything via trade. I abused the hell out of this lol Just drop your fatmans and missile launchers on the ground, that frail girl can handle all your big... guns.

So why Cait/Preston specifically? And do they need (modded) power armor because it increases carrying capacity more than deep pockets does? And they don't use up Fusion cores too right?

Lone wanderer is only better than a companion as a loot mule, if your buddy of choice is dogmeat.

Lone wanderer's carry buff is less than what a companion can carry. But lone wanderer + dogmeat means best of both worlds.

I have stuck with Codsworth as much because he's not judgmental as hell. Preston I tried and ditched ASAP because he literally can't hit a ghoul you shot both legs off of after 6 shots.

Being able to hit "take all" without having to stop to give them back all their weapons and armor they decided to unequip also helps.

Preston kept switching between keeping his hat and giving me his clothes, or keeping his clothes and giving me his hat.

I thought I read that strong can do 250.

Now I noticed the Lone Wanderer perk seems quite OP because doesn't it still work with Dogmeat as a companion because if it does I get +100 Carry Weight, take far less damage and deal far more damage and I still have Dogmeat as a companion and pack mule right?
Twisted Traveller Dec 10, 2015 @ 2:26pm
Strong back is helpful, but you have the issue of it draining the ♥♥♥♥ out of your AP to "Run" (basically it gives you normal movement speed at a heavy AP cost) and this can be just as annoying as not being able to run when you're in combat.
kaffekoppen Dec 10, 2015 @ 2:26pm
Yeah it's quite OP, but it's still better to get the companion perks and THEN switch to Dogmeat/Lone Wanderer.

From a min-max perspective anyway.
ImHelping Dec 10, 2015 @ 2:27pm
Pros of Dogmeat vs Codsworth: Works with lone wanderer. low profile to shoot over. okay at sneaking.

Pros of Coddsworth vs dogmeat: Doesn't constantly fall to his death off catwalks. personality. Can actually kill a ghoul or raider for you. Can wear a bowler hat.
Crusader_bin Dec 10, 2015 @ 2:27pm
Again, if you don't mind dropping stuff on the ground and telling your companions to pick it up... I believe there is no limit. After my companion stopped accepting more items, I gave her at least 2 missile launchers, minigun and several rifles (by orders)
