Also, if you never put up a beacon and you put up a few turrets to protect you (occasionally you do get attacked there) then no one is around to steal your stuff either.
Ooh excellent, good strategy, I never knew the settlers could take your stuff, I've been leaving it all in footlockers in Sanctuary
This is true for every settlement.
Oh, also, on several occasions, on the rarer ones, when attackers actually spawn a ways off from sanc and walk there by the road, to the bridge, they tend to cross right in front of red rocket, at which point, a line of heavy lazers and missile turrets looks pretty.
I only put enough food and beds to keep the companions that **** without them happy. Dogmeat, Codsworth, and Strong are happy with nothing but once I sent Cait there? "Happiness tanking, you now have 1 settler, aka cait"
Ugh, hey Strong, start farming these mutafruits okay? thanks.
EDIT: On that note, you are not allowed to send companions who don't count as settlers, to places with your max settler count. I'm not allowe to Send Codsworth to sanctuary anymore, for example.
I actually plan to turn the long shed on the side of the settlement at sunshine tidings into a PA storage, it's quite large and the best use for it I can come up with, is filling it with armor stands.
