However, it won't help. Settlers and enemies will teleport to wherever they damn please when you arrive (even without fast travel). and off screen attacks don't care how many turrets or walls you have.
Some examples forthcoming
A: I put picket fences to block off all the doors to the various abandoned houses I'm not using in Sanctuary. I keep seeing Settlers inside them trapped so they can't do their job. I get radscorpiins inside them and my normal walls ("Well radscorions can dig so obviously"-) as well as gunners and other enemies who can't dig their way in.
B: I made a sealed enclosure for my water purifiers and generators. with heavy laser turrrers inside it for overkill. enemies end up in there/it doesn't protect against off screen attacks.
C: enemies just end up bypassing my walls and gates when I fast travel ("Well, clearly they teleported because you fast traveled. as a REAL GAMER I never fast travel so-") or when they show up attacking from the back of my enclosed mini town while I'm already there crafting vegetable starch.
and so on.

Honestly, best usage of free standing walls is to prevent incidental fire from hitting your expensive stuff. Definitly at least wall up your generators and purifiers so when an enemy throws a grenade at your settlers, it won't bounce over to them and blow them up.
Whenever I get around to installing missile turrets (I CAN, but they are better at killing you and your settlers than enemies), I'm going to use corner walls to basically give them blinders and limit their cone of fire to where I want them to shoot.
Heavy Laser turrets are your best bet when you want to actually spend power on turrets. Heavy MGs are the best for filling our your defense statistic, but they anywhere near as harmful to enemies.
I have like, 30+ HGMs and a few heavy lasers right now. One heavy laser outperforms half my HMGs shooting at a distant radscorpion chasing my newest settler slowly walking towards my town.
I'm wanting to do a double wall in one settlement for a personal preference, something specifically for the look of it.
Build the lower wall, then use setpos z ### to raise a piece of it to the level of the second wall. Then you can snap to the wall you raised to finish the second row.
Use getpos z to find the current height.
I believe the height of a steel wall piece was is about 230, so use getpos z then add 230 using setpos z. And tweak it from there.

I raised mine enough to get roof sections in between but that isnt required.
Also if you get the wierd bug where that piece looks like its vibrating after you raise it. Just ad a 0.01 to the pos z height. Dunno why but it fixes it.
