why does virgil attack me?

when I enter his cave, he immedeatly starts attacking me. I'm waéaring BoS armour if that makes a difference, and I also found a terminal in his cave mentioning a serum. were can I get that?

If you are an enemy of the Institute he will attack you. Also he becomes hostile if you destroy any of his defenses.
The serum he wants is tied to a quest line and can be found in the Institute.
Beware that you cant finish that questline if you destroy the Institute since he will attack you.

Do you have the targeting helmet mod maybe? Try taking off your helmet anyways.

I have encountered 1 quest where if you enter the room with a weapon in your hand they attack. Redo the same scene without a weapon and they are friendly.

When I went to see Virgil the first time I destroyed his turrets. Wasn't wearing PA or a helmet. Weapon drawn and didn't get attacked.

well, my noobish ass just discovered quicksaves disappear. damn. my last save was 2 hours ago. can I get the questline to the institute, get the serum and go apply it to him? and in that case, were do I get the quest?
