Overall the 10mm is good, if not a bit outshined by a modded Pipe Rifle (.38 ammo also seems much, much more common) and the appropriate perks. It's good for killing smaller stuff, like bugs and molerats and weak raiders.
Honestly it's best, to me personally, with an auto configuration, extended clip, and then legendary effect of either maybe fire or explosive or fire-rate/reload. As a semi-auto, loud option, it's easily outclassed by the .44 or any of the energy pistols, and as a stealth pistol, it's outlcassed by The Deliverer. My two cents.
Hell nah, bro. Explosive Combat Shotgun = insta-win.

So basically, this thing with an Automatic Receiver (makes it shoot full-auto) does an insane amount of damage.
In ~2,5 sec you shoot 24 bullets, each of them inflicting separate 25 bleeding damage = around 1000 dmg in total from every clip, when stacked with base dmg of the pistol.
My 10mm out dps's the deliverer, I also have my perks set up for stealth, I do not use auto, wastes too much ammo, it can do a lot of damage, my favorite go to gun for the majority of raiders etc, though for larger enemies/bosses I switch to another weapon.
You'd actually be surprised by the effective range with a long barrel and no muzzle mod. And if they're out of range, that's when you either like...get closer or let them get closer (since at least half of the enemies in the game are melee). Orrrrr pull out your Gauss Rifle and snipe them.
The real problem is more like when they're less than three or four feet in front of you. Or you accidentally side step infront of a wall or tree before you fire. Then you can pretty much kiss all your limbs good bye xD
The auto, in vats, in close quarters is remarkable, but, not so great in free aiming/shooting, kicks a bit.
