I have 10 Charisma...yet still fail speech checks?
I've looked at the perks, there doesn't seem to be one specifically aimed at persuasion (minus black widow) yet I fail a speech check (on a female btw so Black Widow is ineffective) What gives? :P

No speech check is guaranteed, you just have a higher chance than someone with lower stats.

Yeah quick save and reload during charisma check if you must

The best way to explain it is you have your charisma modifier (in your case 10) then you also have a success roll a random number between lets say 1-10. To pass the speech test in this example you need a total of 16, so you would need to roll a 6 or higher, this is still possible to accomplish at charisma level 6, but it would be much harder.

Yeah even with max charisma there's a chance you'll still fail checks because it's a stupid chance percentage this time around, it will never be 100% sure fire with 10 charisma

I don't even know what they were thinking with this

Charisma is nearly pointless if you are not interested in the Settlement perks. You can pass every speech check in the game with 1 Charisma, thanks to quicksave/load right in the conversation screen. Or just use cloth with + charisma stats or eat some Grape Mentats for +5 Charisma if you dont want to reload so much.
I really miss all the speech options from previous Fallout games depending on Intelligence, Sciene or Weapon skills.

Yeah, it uses the "roll" method like stated above, but I bet your lick stat can use "loaded dice" if its high enough.

Well that makes my entire char. build pointless then. "I'll give myself 10 Charisma so I can pass everything" what a fool I was... :\

1 C is too low and still takes way too long for quicksave/load spam to get past.

Eh, the skills to Pacify enemies can be quite fun and sometimes a saving grace. If you're lucky enough to pacify a highly ranked Legendary enemy, you can use that to concentrate on killing off the rest of the fodder, then pointing your gun at his unsuspecting face. Or, of course, if you get the 2nd level of those perks, have them fight for you first.

Yeah, how far are you along? I'd consider a reroll because at least 6-7 of those points could be much better well spent

I know everyone hates seeing that "New Vegas" word again but New Vegas had it right with the fixed speech checks. You either got it or you don't - that makes more sense.
Hal Ramersby Dec 2, 2015 @ 10:19pm
You can install a tiny mod from Nexus that makes speech checks binary, no random chance involved anymore.
