Fallout 4
i5-6600k vs. i7-4790k
the 4790k has a higher clock speed (4.0 -4.4Ghz) but the 6600k will still turbo to 3.9Ghz, and is a bit cheaper. According to User Benchmark the 6600k has a higher effective speed overall at 104% compared to 4790k at 100% (which one more important? higher clock speed, or higher effective speed?). The 4790k has 4 cores, 8 threads while the 6600k has 4 and 4 (is 8 threads a big deal?). Also the 6600k is an i5 (not sure how this would affect, nor how the skylake vs haswell difference would affect). So which one will be the better processor in the long run? I have already purchased an ASUS GTX 980, 750w Corsair RMx, and an intel SSD...

IMO, 4790k for the few extra bucks, go all the way.

The i7's are beautiful, depending on what you want to spring for.
In my honest opinion, i like the skylake 6700k the most so far.
why not just 6700k? they hit 4.5 on stock voltage, and about 60% can hit 4.6-4.8 with just a bit of extra voltage. + you get DDR4 & z170

I have an AMD perfect for streaming my games from my desktop to my laptop when i'm away from home
LOL get outta here....
maybe I should just get the 6700k....about 100 $ more than the 6600k....but who knows which one will see a sale soon (didn't see any yesterday, but might have missed it........the 6600k would be compatible with z170 and DDR4 mem too right? what about the 4790?

The 6700k is worth it, trust me.
The i5 will perform better in games, unless you plan on streaming as well.
If you don't have the mobo or RAM and you don't plan on streaming, definetly go with the newer skylake i5.

If you plan on streaming or currently have 1150 socket mobo then definetly go with the 4790k.

The i5 will perform better in games because it has better per core performance than the 4790k or even the 6700k. But if you plan on streaming as well, you will heavily benefit from the hyperthreading.

it Is I just built a rig with it and ddr4 3000 15 cas and that eliminated the CPU bottleneck in cities with ultra settings (shadow draw distance) at around 4.6 ghz it gets above 60 fps minimums.

no it won't, 1st of all it's clocked lower then the 6700k out of the box, sure you can overclock it just as high, but you won't be hitting higher clocks then the 6700k can, and you will just loose HT. some games actually use HT and in DX12 it will become even more beneficial.

Yep, I came from an 8320 at 4.7ghz to my new 6700k and I saw an increase of 20+ FPS. But my 6700k is at stock speed... you shouldn't need to overclock it at all to eliminate a cpu bottleneck.

Nvidia Titan X SLI-2
Nvidia 6700k Skylake
Samsung EVO 1 Terabyte SSD
2 Terabytes HDD, I need the space for work too.
Asus Rampage V Extreme Motherboard, considering getting another one if anyone has any ideas

Nvidia just got an sli profile, if anyone's interested.

Oops, you're right. I was thinking if they were clocked at the same speed the i5 would edge ahead. I forgot the i5s are at 3.5ghz.

But, clock for clock, the i5 does still have higher per core performance than the i7s. Some games do use more than 4 cores, but most do not.

If OP can afford to get the 6700k that's a definite plus, but if not, the difference between the 4790k and 6700k is neglible. As is DDR4 vs DDR3... so if he already has 1150 mobo and DDR3 RAM it would not be worth it at all to upgrade everything for skylake.
I'm not too familiar with overclocking, and dont really like the idea of having to worry about temperature all the time, so I do not think I will overclock....I use my comp. for gaming mostly so I want to prioritize my build for video games....I dont really care about streaming, I have a big screen in my family room for tv/movies........I think I am definitely interested in DDR4 memory though

Not everyone is interested in or willing to overclock. I myself prefer reliability/stability over a bit more clock speed, which in and of itself doesn't automatically transate into more performance. My 4790K at stock speeds can happily chew up anything I throw at it currently. overclocking it would provide no benefit, and overclocking something slower/lower which isn't any cheaper doesn't make sense.
