Best rifles for VAT? Best for sniping?
As we know rifles get half as much VAT shots,

Which is your favorite rifle for VAT?

Optionally, which is your favorite for sniping in VAT mode?

Are you talking hit chances or shot counts?

Even when it doesn't mention better or worse hip fire, shorter barrels and shorter stocks will make vats shot count easyer on most weapons.

For example, my combat shotgun goes from one shot in vats, to two shots in vats, if I make it short barrel/short stock. even though no combat shotty parts list penalties or benefits to hip fire. (or course, a short barrel is bad for VATS accuracy due to the smaller range).

Laser weapons are great for VATS shooting (and hip fire). Short rifle stock for a Laser rifle is basically as good as marskman or recoil compensating for it, but you usually get an extra VATS shot out of it.

a good question cause now that they've removed skills, how are you supposed to guage vats acuracy via perception??

Gauss Rifle 500 dmg 6.3x sneak attack damage. Sniper, Penetrator, Concentrated Fire and 15 Perception 95% head chance to hit from pretty much any distance. 1 shot everything on survival difficulty.

Great for hitting fast moving targets or taking down multiple targets in a pinch, it also looks rad in slow-mo when heads gets splattered from a massive railgun blast. :LaserBeam::death:

I second this. Add in chemist with overdrive and ultra jet for the best vats experience

Well, it says right in the game that Perception helps VATS aim chance.

Though things like weapon range stats are also as much of a factor as weapon accuracy stats.

VATS has always been terrible at sniper distances (to balance out scopes in real time, basically), and headshots at range without the relevantperks.

As for "no more skills", I actually like that (when it comes to weapons). This is the most I have used and enjoyed Energy weapons out of any fallout game since the first one. Because as soon as I got a laser, I was good at using it because I'm good ar normal guns. What a world.

I also think Energy weapons got the most out of the new weapons customization system. "Gee, do I want my laser to be a shotgun or not? *sticks shotgun muzzle on* whooo fully automatic laser shotgun pistol!"

EDIT: I've head mixed things about the penetrator perk. For a lot of people and a lot of guns, all it does is act like your shot isn't blocked, and then has your bullets and lasers uselessly hit the scenery instead of penetrating.

Don't use scope sighted rifle in VATS. The action point cost is huge for scopes. Use reflex sight.

VATS is really for pistols, and Critical luck builds. If you gonna use rifles, may as well just stay in FPS mode.

Always nice, but sometimes being able to take 5 vats shots is nicer than taking less than that.

Honestly the accuracy statistic difference between scopes and tactical sights isn't large enough to make the choice for you. Pick your scope or tactical sight based on what you want to use in real time (or, you know, if you want to trigger sniper perk stuff).

I'd much rather shoot the legs off half the ghouls right on top of me during bullet time first, than have them take some bites out of me because "VATS isn't for rifles ugh".

Even with only 5 agility I still get 4 VATS shots out of my long barrel combat rifle, and 5ish from my laser rifle. That's enough to finish off a bunch of not quite dead enemies before they are allowed to shoot back at you. Or torso double tap a pair of synths to death, etc.

Knowing how to realtime shoot people in the face is much better in the long run, but don't go all "LOL don't use VATS" either.
