Companions do not attack???

I am dragging Preston around and for the last 3 or 4 missions I notice he just doesn't attack. Something has to actually attack him for him to respond. I have seen enemies walk right past him and neither of them attack each other. For the record we are in sneak mode - but does that mean "Companion doesn't attack mode???" Anyone shed some light on this?

Companions will only attack if the enemy is in alert or danger mode if you are close to an enemy and they notice you. This is regarding sneak.

Preston is super incredibly useless in particular.

I brought him for a while because laser muskets are very strong when cranked up...

But he literally can't hit a ghoul with both it's legs blown off, after 6 shots (even if the laser visual hits them in right in the chest).

I checked. He only killed that one because he accidentally lit a nearby car on fire causing it to explode.

You can console placeatme *companion id* if you have lost them and cant remember where you lost them

If you want to defeat ghouls, bring Codsworth. That saw of his will disable the ghouls to the degree that even Preston can hit them -- there will be so many parts he is bound to hit on accident on occasion.

And if not maybe you can just leave preston there. If only one could do the same for marcy. I am sure she would cause regular ghouls to rot their brains prematurely.

I have to check on Marcy but I didn't have any issues with her aggressiveness (but I played her for a long time and switched to Preston to get through his story, so I don't know if this affects other companions or not yet). Its just been recent that Preston just stands there like an idiot while enemies are passing right by him... A few missions ago I could place him in the general area of enemies, draw them out and he would go to work - now he just sits there drooling on himself and coloring outside the lines...
