Giving companions weapons?
Hey guys,

Bit of an obvious question here but how do you make your comapnions use the weapons you give them?

Im using one of the human type companions and they keep reverting back to a 10mm pistol even though I have given them something else and pressed the 'T' key on it to equip.

Any ideas?

Im presuming the companions deal more damage with the better weapons at this point also.

Make sure they have enough ammo for it.

either give em melee or let em use their defualt weapon is my suggestion

if you want em to use a weapon though you trade it in to their inventory and press t for make em equip it jsut like armour

however any weapon they are given they will require ammo for it and when they ahve used the ammo up will go back to thier default weapon all in all they just waste ammo and no giving em a weapon with the same ammo type as thier default doesnt work either

Yeah this is interesting. I've had a companion that I gave a sniper rifle to with around 200 rounds of .308. Yet they'd keep taking out a Combat Rifle even though I never even gave them one, then they started spawning ammo for it, and this was even a modified Combat Rifle with a red dot and suppressor and I have no idea where they got the gun or the ammo. It just seems like they will randomly slowly pick up loot the more you drag them along when you're killing raiders and other humanoids.

The companion this happened to was Cait.

The "default companion weapon" may be a levelled item. I got Cait pretty early and she'd default to a double barreled shotgun when she'd run out of ammo for whatever I'd given her. I give all the companions either way too much ammo for whatever I equip them with, or a backup weapon of my choosing and ammo for that as well, so I haven't seen anyone default recently.

Strong picks up all weapons until his inventory is full. He usually has around 25 pistols and a number of guns, rifles etc. And when I throw them out the first thing he says Strong go find stuff.

I gave him a missile launcher, fatman, minigun, flamer and a super sledge. He will use the weapon that has highest damage that he has ammo for. His go to weapon is the super sledge. We're level 50ish and he can easily kill a legendary super mutant butcher with one blow.

They will randomly grab loot of dead enemies in mid combat - one time I went to trade with Preston he had like 4 weapons, tons of ammo and a legenary piece of armor

Most companions do pick up weapons they find (and like), yes.

Be careful not to leave any fatmans or missile launchers lying around... sometimes they don't have very good aim, or don't seem to be aware that those aren't precisely close quarters weapons. :/

Strange, so far I have not had this happen, but I have had them jack my Power armor when my base got attacked... had to start pulling fusion cores.

Yup, all NPCs will do that, not only companions.

Don't leave your keys in your car. ;)

(What I'm not sure about is whether they're smart enough to put a fusion core they've acquired elsewhere in a powerless frame in order to use it; they probably are, I expect.)

Wow... You officially taught me to remove the cores from any spare power armor suit lying around. Which is pretty scary because in Sanctuary I have 3 extra T60 power armor suits, and in Perdwyn I have 1 extra T60 PA suit. It'd be a shame and a lost of thousands of caps if one of them was stolen or something during an alert or attack. Especially because NPC's often get scared and panic about the smallest things. For instance, if I call in a BOS vertibird anywhere near any settlement of mine - then all the settlers freak out and raise alarms and go into combat mode - now imagine if they all jacked your PA's for simply calling in a vertibird.
