Settlers wont assign to artillery

So ive done the old guns quest and got some people on artillery but now I need to set artillery in 5 settlements for the "With Our Powers Combined" quest and I try assigning a settler and they say ok but dont use it and just go away.

Might be a pathing issue then, have you tried moving the artillery piece?

yes ive even scarped it and made a new one

You need to be in the settlement workshop, walk over to the settler you want to assign to the mortar/artillery piece, hit E to command, then walk over to the artillery piece and hit E again to assign, I think it's E been a few days since I last assigned anyone to anything, oh and they wont be at the artillery piece unless you call in a strike, then they usually drop what they are doing and walk to the mount and pull the lever.

ive done that but when I assign them they just dont do it

My settlers ocassionaly at the artilery but not always. Settlers work.

go to the games properties in your Steam library and verify the integrity of the game cache, you might be missing a file, I've assigned over 10 settlers to artillery in 4 different locations and never had this happen, also try fast traveling to a different location like diamond city and then fast travel back and see if it works.

In the future, I suggest the following method to ensure proper assignment of your settlers to any job task, this will kill two birds with one stone since it will verify that the settler can get to their job (path finding) and it will verify proper assignment ...

Command your settler to GO to a location next to their job location (pick the ground).
Once they arrive, assign them their job. If you're still looking at the job assignment, it won't change from RED to GREEN unless you move your viewpoint away from it then back (fresh problem).
