i thought about this theory few days ago and i decided to open a discussion about the matter..
i think dogmeat is a synth because of a few reasons:
1.dogmeat is after all one of the only dogs that arn't mutated in the commonwealth and he looks preety "clean" to me at least
2.{SPOILER ALERT} its known that the institute also made animal synth's{SPOILER ALERT}
3.dogmeat is quiet smart... too smart. and think about it he's just some random dog from the wastland nobody trained him (as far as we know) and even if he is trained, there's alot of thing's he does and understands that almost no dog will understand
4.that's kind of connected to 3 but its a spoiler so..{SPOILER ALERT} he understand your request to find kellog by the smell of his cigaret's and you could say alot of dogs do that but i just don't buy it

my theory is that - {SPOILER ALERT}i think dogmeat is a synth sent by the institute (shaun) to help you find shaun{SPOILER ALERT}

5.you find dogmeat almost immdietly after exsiting the vault i find it a bit suspicious

Well, Danse Is a Synth, but still served under The Brotherhood so It's possible Dogmeat Is a synth... If he wasn't just a dog.

I thought dog meat was in the first fallout maybe? but I definitely remember him in fallout 2, you might be on to something. I bought a junk yard dog off a guy I met in the wasteland for 250 caps. She's in pretty good condition and living happily in Sanctuary. dogmeat needed a girl friend.

Dogmeat's always been there as a companion, except In New Vegas, and Tactics.

Considering that Gen 3 Synths are completely human like, and they were able to create Gorilla's It'd be more 4th Gen, or at least a highly updated Gen 3.
