Full armor? or several pieces?
I'm not sure how to mesure which is better...
Should i just add teh values of, for example, BoS uniform + chest piece + arms/legs pieces?
i'm using a full suit that has 30 defense, if the total of the BoS set is higher by adding it's values, is that better?
this is probably a stupid question but i want to be sure
thanks!

When you wear a full armor set, it'll show the armor value for each part of your body in your inventory.

do the railroad mission for P.A.M. and you dont have to worry about stuff like armor anymore. And if you find the bug that I found you will easy surpass a set of power armor and dmg and energy resist.

Fully upgraded modular armor is usually better. Chest/Arms/Legs plus a helmet, though not every set has a designated helmet(no Leather helmet from what I've seen). I'm decked out in a full set of Polymer Heavy Combat Armor with an Armored Military Fatigues as an "underlayment" as I like to call them, Mk V so it gives 110 AR to both Ballistics and Energy so a grand total of around 250 AR with around 50 for each body part.

Thanks guys!
I have the T-60 PA that i got from joining the BoS, but since i have this "condition" that keeps me from using it because i'm afraid i'll run out of cores (i have like 15 lol) i want a good armor set out of that.

Explore enough and you will never run out of cores. I have used power armour for over a hundred hours straight and I use a gatling laser now (requires fusion cores). I have 32 cores at the moment..

You can buy them from vendors if you scavenge enough caps, or just find them from exploration.

I'm also on survival and don't abuse fast travel, so the fusion cores drain from travelling on foot...still no issues though.

Just install a mod to take care w/ fusion core problem or create a character w/ intelligence build.

There's also the nucleur physicist perk which makes fusion cores last twice as long...if you're really that desperate.

Use the seperated armor, and the ballistic weave modding on under clothing, a hat, mask, and the deformed mechanical teddy bear head covering. I have 250 Damage reduction.. lol

It's just an OCD haha i do the same in every game with this type of thing ._. i always save up stuff for "harder situations" and end up never using them...

Even a Shielded Vault Suit and Studded Leather pieces, without Railroad mods will match or exceed 30. When you go to Metal or Combat or Synth (not even the Sturdy or Heavy versions) you'll push past that even farther.

Plus, you can do a lot more with the modular. Like you can put Sleek on the legs, boosting your move speed in stealth. Stabilized on the arms, reducing sway when aiming down the sights or scope. Asbestos Lined on the torso so you can't be set on fire. Dense on the torso (or for Metal, on everything) to cut the damage you take from explosives. Or Ultra-Light on everything to give you up to 30 more action points to work with, and cut the weight of the armor massively. Though you may have to scrounge a bunch of cork and aluminium for that one.

You can also make most armors 'Shadowed' which tends to be a mid-range buff to damage and energy resistance, with middling weight increase, that makes you harder to see when sneaking in shadows or low light, and can be put on in /addition/ to stuff like Muffled or Sleek.

There's even things like Custom Fitted for legs that reduce the AP cost of sprinting if you want to run away or to charge your foes. And the arms can be given things like Brawling, Weighted, or Strengthened to boost melee/unarmed.

Helmets can't get as many mods though. And don't expect to see much in the way of helms aside from construction hats, mining helmets, army helmets, and metal helmets for a long, long time. Every Combat or Synth helmet is precious.

Oh, and if you're lucky (or using console commands) every piece of modular armor can have a Legendary attribute.

This. Most of the time a single good piece of armor will go above your 30 on the suit.
But do the railroad quests; the one referenced above doesn't lock you into any ending and you can dress how you want e.g badass.

If you invest and spend time to upgrade armor, individual armor parts will provide better protection and resistances, but will probably be heavier.

My advice is earlier on go far enough with the Minutemen quest chain to get the Minuteman General armor. It's all one piece but it protects well and is very light. But I've spent almost all my time in Power Armor since the mid 20s (now about lvl 40) and I still have like 42 fusion cores. I've only ever bought two earlier on.

Well, not counting the mostly depleted ones that are less than 10% that I have saved to either sell or turn into grenades.. Or in the 8 or 9 power armor suits I have for my companions. Then it would probably be closer to 60ish. I've spent no extra effort even seeking them out. They seem plentiful.
