It seems to consistantly hurt pretty much everything in close quarters, from deathclaws, to assaultbots.

Nope. Unless you're talking POINT BLANK range. While forgetting things like recoil, damage fall off, and ignoring circumstances.
Though Shotguns have always been the most broken gun in Bethesdout. Remember the Double Barrel shotgun from Fallout 3? Was the best stealth weapon in the game. And also the best critical weapon in the game even next to the Backwater Rifle that could critically hit on every single shot. Gah.
Shotguns are top tier though. Next to the Gauss and Laser Musket + Explosive Gatling Laser.
Normal shotguns aren't all that impressive, but this one is xD
I'm talking 10 or less feet, often the brown trouser moment when a deathclaw somehow sneaks up you and there is no cover you can reach, shotgun, vats, stomache, pretty effective, though spray'npray ain't bad either... I'd love to pick up one of the explosive shotguns, but my luck with legendarys is ZILCH, i find crap.
For the record: deathclaws requires 2-3 shots at close-medium range with this one xDDDD
Only reason I say the Gauss is better is because nothing I've shot has survived one shot even not fully charged, and it contains 20 rounds and is incredibly accurate. Charging it is a moot point too since it takes like a second, barely a lul in firing etc.
Yeah I never found anything nice in terms of Combat Shotguns. Got a Powerful one and also the Le Fusil Terribles, and that's it. I'm hunting for a Never-Ending Sawed Off...doubt I'll find one at level 91 though.
I'm so used to using this at this point:

and not having to aim directly at an enemy merely the floor near them or a wall or the ceiling, that my weapon knowledge for the last 30 levels has literally drained away. Bleh. Explosive Rounds on a shotgun is NOT GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH since the shotgun is ideally used at close range, which would catch you in the blast. I'd prefer Plasma Infused, or Instigating.
Yeah I admit at long range this shotgun does much less damage than .45. I always have to have other types of weapons. Also this weapon sucks at "hostage rescue" because the hostage was blown up each time I've used it.
Completely wrong...
In FONV, the damage was displayed as 7x30 for example. Meaning one shot consists of 7 pellets. In FO4, the 212 damage of your shotgun is the maximum damage your shogun does, when every pellet hits.
Therefor, the combat shotgun is still very powerfull, but far away from beeing the most powerful.
The double shot gauss rifle posted above is indeed the most powerful weapon aside from explosives.
Or, atleas as far as i know.
We need a MIRV Shotgun. Fires 8 shells which (somehow) prime midflight and fire their payload of 9 or so pellets each. Now that'd be a gun you could use in a hostage situation.
Except 212 can't be the total damage dealt, since this one is much more powerful than my 500dmg missile launcher at close range.
There's a bug with displaying dmg right now. Just like 30+ dmg can't be all that MIRV fat mean deals.
Would be nice to allow us modify the ammo to different gagues.
