Lost The Flare Gun
I may have accidentally broke it down for parts or sold it. Either way I cannot find it. Can I use the console to drop a new one? How?

I might be wrong, but this is what I would try:

Go to one of your previous saves, drop the gun on the floor. Go to the console and point the mouse on the item - you should see the id of it (?).

After that you should be able to use player.additem in the newer save to fix your problem. It should go someware like:
player.additem ID 1
Only after you excape console you should see typical prompt "Flare gun was added.."
If it says something different then ID was wrong and you should probably load save again to do not have something that you should not have :)

There is also possiblity that Preston or a woman that initiated "Old guns" quest will have it on to trade (not sure if you checked that possibility already).

I did try Preston he does not have another. I will talk to the lady from the quest but I think the additem thing is a solid bet. Thanks for the suggestions.

Dat wasteland life, tho!

The id for the Flare Gun is 1025AC, just use the additem command to add yourself a new one.

This worked, thanks! I'm curious how you find the id of an item. I hovered over it in the console and clicked on it but I got a different #.

You don't get the base ID of an item like that, when you click an item, you get the ref ID of the item, which means the ID of that specific Flare Gun, I gave you the base ID of the item, which spawns an unspecific Flare Gun when used.

I found it looking it up on FO4Edit(because I already had it open and it was quicker), but you can also just hit in "help "<name of the item>" 0" to get the base ID of the item.

If you've misplaced your first flare gun or just want another, simply head to a Minutemen controlled settlement. They tend to have spare flare guns lying around.
Usually, you can find another flare gun in the workshop inventory at The Castle after you've secured it for the Minutemen.

Bethesda should have marked it as a quest item. Oh well.

If your flare gun went lost and never found, or you cannot keep one:

you could resort to settlement flares. Lacks the field response... applies more If you are responding more to settlement attacks, instead of in the field using flare response. Attach a firework launcher after a powered siren switch and whenever there is a danger present inside the settlement, a flare goes up (provided a settler can make it to the switch). Craft these flares on a chemistry bench. Remember to refill the launcher and check the switch to be OFF for good practice after an attack. Configure on a terminal.

if you do that you have to load the launcher with one shell each time or you could set a custom fast travel target and then place the fireworks launcher near it wired to a delayed switch (the one that transmits power briefly after being activated). set the fireworks launcher fire delay to 1 sec and the switch delay to 0.5 sec. the launcher will the only fire one shell so you can load as many as you like all at once.
