Keep in mind, though, that you can create your own RadAway at a chem station (there's one behind one of the houses on the west side of Sanctuary if you haven't already found it) and that if you use a cooking station to turn Mutant Hound Meat into Mutant Hound Chops, those both restore health and remove rads.
For crafting RadAway, the big things you'll need are antiseptic (which you can find in things like Abraxo Cleaner) and glowing fungus. I know some of the fungus grows in the caves under the Red Rocket station near Sanctuary but they turn up often enough and it's hard to miss them thanks to them glowing bright green.
Rads can only healed with Rad Away or at a doc (possibly a companion?). But Rad Away is so ridiculously easy to find. And even without perks it removes 300 Rads. I have almost 100 Rad Away sitting in The Castle and I carry 2-4 on me at all times. Usually I end up bringing 20+ back to base after doing 1-3 side missions.
Tip for using Rad Away - Don't use it unless your HP bar is at least 25% red. Anything less than that and you're essentially wasting it.
By the way, I'm playing on Survival. I don't know if that ups the chance for finding Rad Away and RadX, but that stuff is like dirt it's so common. Not like in FONV where Rad Away was more precious than everything.
EDIT - There are some perks that slowly reduce your Rads, too.
