Is there a way to equip companions with better weapons?
Or how bout getting a companion with more than just a hammer and pistol. Anyone have any ideas?

Just talk to them and chose trade, then give them whatever weapon you want them to use (and a bunch of ammo) and select the weapon for them ( Y-button on xbox controller, not sure what button on a m+kb setup).

Same thing with armor, if you want them to use better armor.

You can do the same thing with settlers, to give them better gear for when/if your settlements get attacked.

For KBM,the button to equip the highlighted equipment is "T"

On PC its T when you're pointing at the item in their inventory. There are companions, or just one that I know is, that won't take any armor though, and they do use ammo. So give them tons.

Trade with them and take their weapon, giving whatever weapon you want. I've been told this is how you do it, not yet tried it myself. I don't know whether they will equip armour, though. I'd like to have my settlers wearing armour I give them.

edit: beaten.

And wow, thanks guys. I didn't know that you actually had to TELL them to equip the items! I guess because I only ever took away their weapons and replaced them, they auto equipped them for me. That makes sense now.

Y or ∆ = jump button, by default, for gamepad users who've remapped it.

You can simply give them the weapons you want and press T (same for changing their armors) and you can put a melee weapon in yout companion's inventory and they will automatically use them when the enemies get close. However, the default weapons for your companions have unlimited ammos, so you need to give them the right ammo if you want your companions keep using the weapons you give to them.

Yes, settlers and companions will wear any armor you order them to equip. You can even order them to enter a power armor frame. Giving settlers certain kinds of outfits/armor is a useful way to tell apart the ones you've assigned to jobs.

Has anyone tried simply giving them 1 of the ammo they need? This used to be a trick you could use in old Bethesda games (some of their NPCs actually only had one ammo and the game treated it as infinite). It's actually quite nice if they do use up all their ammo, though. Gives you a reason to give them melee weapons (boxing gloves for everyone!).

Oh, thanks, I didn't know you could order them into things like that :) And good idea on the uniforms too.

I use an Xbox 360 Controller and I tried the Y button when I gave power armor to Nick Valentine (the Synth). It wasn't even an option on the bottom middle of the inventory menu. It didn't even do anything. All he does is carry it, not equip it. Is it because he's a synth or something? Would this work on Piper instead?

EDIT: I just ordered him to get into it, instead of trading it. I got him in the suit. But how do I get him OUT of the suit?

I put armor and a spiked muzzle on Dogmeat last night.

I take all the guns and armor I collect first to my settlements and outfit the settlers with better armor and guns. Anything left over is scraped or sold.

the 1 ammo works for settlers, but not companions, upside is, all your settlers can be rocking miniguns, missile launchers and fat mans, with very little ammo required.

You talk to him. The Relationship option should be replaced with Exit Power Armor.
