Fallout 4
How do you sort your loot?
So, after a good few hours of playing, scavenging etc, all my stuff is just everywhere, can any of you recommend storage techniques?

I haven't personally confirmed it myself but one thing you shouldn't do is to put your weapons into containers that isn't your settlement storage. It seems that settlers can pull stuff out and use it themselves but they'll never bother to return it.

One of my settlers was walking around with a Fatman. First thing I did was confiscate the crap out of it. I'm not sure if it was originally my Fatman but I wouldn't take the chance.

Another time, during a settlement attack, one of the settlers yanked my power armor from the Armor Bench and used it. The helment disappeared and didn't reappear even after the jackass jumped off the suit outside of the settlement. It seems that the helment got stashed into his person and stayed there.

Have a container for each type of item. Armour, clothing, weapons etc. I even have a couple containers set aside for junk weapons and armour I can use for trading/crafting
I make 3 footlockers, 1 for weapons (mods included) 1 for Armor (mods included) and 1 for random stuff.

split it up. i have a steamer trunk for all the stuff i'm going to want to sell, a cooler for aid items, all junk in the work bench, a metal box for weapons and something for armor/clothes.
One box for stuff I pull out for usage every now and again (Missle Launchers and other heavy weapons)
One box for cool things I probably won't use (Minutemen General outfit, etc.)
One box for things I'm going to sell once the settlement stores get caps again.
One box for misc items I can't sell and just want out of my inventory.

Obviously magazine and bobblehead stands as well!
Yeah, after hearing about thieving settlers taking things from the Workbench I crafted a container safe near the Workbench in Sanctuary and deposited anything I didn't want stolen; better 'safe' than sorry lol
I've never had my settlers steal anything, I'm under the impression they only do if you also store ammo for the weapons.

This is one the best ways.

I rename all my guns to "-- <ammo type> <damage> <range>". So would look like "- 308 72 203"

I could be wrong but it you place the container on the open ground, they will steal it but if you place the container in a house piece (Not one of the houses already in sanctuary) they won't. I have a container in my house that hasn't been stolen from yet but all the weapons from my trade container I placed outside are gone.
I put all my containers next to the weapon workbench/power armor station in Sanctuary so that isn't it.
In my main workshop, I lined the wall with the containers that look like a workbenches with shelves above it. I'll load each with a type of item, and then put one of that item on the shelf. For example I have one with all pistols & melee, and I put a 10mm pistol on the 1st shelf and a knife on another. This way I can organize my junk and know exactly what is in each container. (stuff placed on top won't despawn.)
Ultimatly, this is a little off the rails, the way inventory is managed needs to be drastically enhanced to cut down on about 95% of having to manual organize. Edit: especially in the weapons catagory.
