Does dog armor help Dogmeat or just cosmetic?

So as my travels as the general, I was lucky enough to come upon "dog armor" helmet, actually body armor, and collar.

Seems to help him, it takes more damage to Knock him down

Cosmetic. There's light, normal and heavy armor, helmets and collars.

Feels like it weighs down him rather than doing any good so I just gave him bandana and done with it. Plus looks can be confusing sometimes.. I hate to waste shotgun shell on my dog.

You can get heavy dog armor that dogmeat can wear, it is dropped by attack dogs but it is unclear whether it boosts dogmeats stats.
