They're a lot more useful if you give them weapons. I gave Deacon an upgraded flamer with 1000 ammo and he regularily kills things before I even notice them.
I've been shot in the back by them, didn't realise what was hiting me at first, not sure how that;d go with a flamer. I think ultimately, once I have other things I want, I'll focus on lone wanderer and strong back.
I have the companion perk fully leveled so that might be why my experience is different.
Cait,
who decided that the middle of storming Kellog's compound was the time to have her heart to heart backstory revealing chat. (I blame the drugs)
Piper,
who upon traveling to red Rocket and turning my back on her for like a minute apparently saw a rad stag and decided it needed to die, and that the minigun I had in storage was the right tool for the job. (Probably a good thing I don't keep any fat-mans lying around)
I find Strong's concept has a lot of potential. However it hasn't seemed to go anywhere yet. And valentine seems like he'd be good for commentary, but I haven't come across any real gems yet.
Go to the prydwen with Valentine to have him lay some sick burns on those bastards.
He's also the reason why I don't hate synths, just the institute. His companion mission is pretty good.
Cait
Nick
Dont really care for the rest.
