How do you rank the companions?
1. Nick Valentine (His noir detective personality is great, his backstory is great, his companion quest is the best and his dialogue is great. He's just great.)

2. Deacon (His sarcastic attitude is entertaining and reminds me a lot of myself. He also has the best dialogue lines in my opinion)

3. Piper (Very relatable, arguably the most "good" companion. Fiery women are also a blast to travel with. Arguably the best romance path and companion perk)

4. Cait (I've got a thing for fiery women. And Irish women. And redheads. She's also got a great backstory)

5. Curie (She's just adorable with how innocent and inquistive she is. That accent certainly helps as well)

6. MacCready (Good backstory, good dialogue and the second best companion quest)

7. Dogmeat (Doesn't judge me for my actions. He gets in the way a lot but that's just what dogs do)

8. Hancock (Not a bad companion but I feel like he would've been a much better faction leader)

9. Codsworth (Not as useful in combat but it was nice talking to a companion who knew me beofre the war)

10. Danse (Pretty boring and generic. Beast in combat though)

11. Strong (Hates nearly everything I do and has annoying dialogue)

12. Preston (Even more boring than Danse. I don't care about him or the Minutemen)

13. X6-88 (Haven't actually got him yet but I've heard he's only worth using to get the companion perk)

The dog is good if using the lone wanderer perk glitch with him... as far as combat, they're all kind of crappy, can't say I feel much 'depth' with any of them, but i like nick, the bogart synth is just cool, makes me want to make an old school noir gangsta character.

They're a lot more useful if you give them weapons. I gave Deacon an upgraded flamer with 1000 ammo and he regularily kills things before I even notice them.

They all seem to be terrible for stealth, Cait even went wandering off, while I was sneaking and alerted a building full of super mutants. That seems to be a common problem with them.

I've been shot in the back by them, didn't realise what was hiting me at first, not sure how that;d go with a flamer. I think ultimately, once I have other things I want, I'll focus on lone wanderer and strong back.

I have the companion perk fully leveled so that might be why my experience is different.

I don't have a lot to contribute not spending much time with the various companions. But the two that have managed to stand out are:

Cait,
who decided that the middle of storming Kellog's compound was the time to have her heart to heart backstory revealing chat. (I blame the drugs)

Piper,
who upon traveling to red Rocket and turning my back on her for like a minute apparently saw a rad stag and decided it needed to die, and that the minigun I had in storage was the right tool for the job. (Probably a good thing I don't keep any fat-mans lying around)

I find Strong's concept has a lot of potential. However it hasn't seemed to go anywhere yet. And valentine seems like he'd be good for commentary, but I haven't come across any real gems yet.

If I feel like using a companion I always use Dogmeat. We just make a great tag team when he holds enemies down or gets them all around him and I chuck a grenade into the middle...sorry Dogmeat. Not to meantion he finds stuff I miss when I go blind and doesn't judge me. Only cons is he always gets in the way when looting stuff or triggers traps. Oh and the Lone Wanderer perk works with Dogmeat.

Go to the prydwen with Valentine to have him lay some sick burns on those bastards.

He's also the reason why I don't hate synths, just the institute. His companion mission is pretty good.
