I'm totally aware that the settlement gimmick is pretty much inconsequential in the game, but I like the satisfaction I get from a nice settlement grid :3
No, the settlers will still be assigned to whatever you assigned them to, so the game doesn't distinguish if they are physically using them. As long as you assign them to crops and beds, your happiness won't be affected, it just kills immersion.
Actually that is incorrect. They cannot be assigned to tasks, as they are outside the construction zone. They count toward food, water, etc. needs, but cannot contribute to the workload.
If you want to speed things up use the siren to cause panic and stop the siren and the settlers will go back to whatever you assingned them for. This actually works on some other bugged settlers at other settlements also.....not all thought.
