Yeah, not much of a difference. but it is A difference.
It gets easier when and if you put a drum magazine on to the combat shotty though. As well as looking at your ammo count indicator.
I'm reminded of Killing Floor 2. The medic class in that game has a modular weapons system design for it's class weapons. So it's shotgun and assault rifle look even more simmilar.
But I also won't blame anyone who gets tripped up by it while in a hurry and being shot at, regardless of any visual or UI based indications it has to seperate them.
PS: Pipe revolvers are actually pretty cool if you go Gunslinger. You can blow the head off the average super mutant in one shot, and they are also your only pistol option for .45 ammo and .308 ammo (Well okay. bolt action pipe gun for .308, but that's wildly impractical)
It looks like something that would blow up in your hand and cost you, your fingers. Most of the weapons are fairly ugly.
