why cant settlers walk up stairs?
i have 11 settlers in one area and all the beds are in the one spot, up 2 flights of stairs, and nobody can seem to get to them. why is this happening? i have checked and there are no gaps in the design.

DO you have any shelves or anything under the stairs. I had the same problem, and nothing visible blocking the stairs, but I had one of those display shelves sitting under the stairs, when I deleted that, it worked.

The shelves must have some invisible walls so the npcs don't run into them, and even though visually they weren't interfering with the stairs, the invisible walls must have been.

I also find that If I can coax one up by selecting them and using the go command every few feet, the rest tend to follow. Or you can sit in a chair and wait for an hour after midnight, and they'll spawn in their beds.

thx for the help. i deleted the stair and placed them in the exact same spot, and that worked for some reason

a navmesh is a bit of coding that allows for navigation (NPCs walking) over a mesh (your fondation is a mesh for instance)... any bit broken in this will result in NPCs not being able to 'use' something even though you can walk over it.
Makes it worth the necro at least ;p

Just don't go crazy with stairs and inclines

The majority of the "OMG SETTLURS 2 DUMB" threads I see is when people have made this complex helix of stairs to a floating chair.

Don't give your settlers bubblegum.

Maybe ramps work better than steps.

Had this happen in one settlement yesterday. The fix that worked for me was to delete the stairs and place stairs again. Don't know why but that worked.

If you are using custom mod stairs or other building assets, those aren't nav meshed. Modders can't nav mesh without the GECK. Once that's released, then those custom stairs and other stuff will work properly.

As for in-game stairs, I haven't had much of a problem with settlers using them. I linked 4 in a row and settlers routinely use them to get to the bar on the roof.
