Can you even sneak in this game?
It's so easy to sneak in Skyrim but much harder to sneak in Fallout games. I'm trying be a sneak melee character but it never works.

Uhm, crouch to sneak?

Are you switching to walk mode while sneaking? Not doing so gives you away super easy until you max out sneak perk. You can also get the Stealth armor mods or muffled ones to help.

If you're having trouble getting within melee distance while sneaking early on, you can use VATS to quickly close the gap and get the sneak attack bonus, just make sure you won't be seen by someone else if you're in a crowded area. It doesn't make you leave stealth once the animation finishes to make sure you don't hit the button again afterwards.

Also pay attention that sneaking takes lighting into account, so stay in dark places if possible at all.

sneaking is super OP in this game...take sneak perks....win. Just make sure you sneak slowly until you get the perk that allows you to sneak at full speed.

Yes you can make you armor dark to ake it more stealthy

It takes quite a while to get to the point where you can sneak and not get spotted easily, even if you are moving slowly rather than running while crouched. For me, it wasn't until after I'd got to level 3 sneaking, a perk you don't get until level 23, if I remember right. There are armor mods to make you harder to spot, and those may help at lower levels, and boosting your agility should help, too. And, of course, suppressed weapons.

worth it to go deep into gun nut too for silencers

More often than not, I end up accidentally sneaking.

Not sure how true all of these are, but at least some of them will help: Reduce how much you are carrying, get out of your power armor, strip down to basic clothes (or stealth upgraded armor), get some magazines to increase your sneak, and get yourself a good high damage suppressed weapon. Stealth boys can also help.

Having a distraction will also help.

Well. Cant really compare it to skyrim... In skyrim it was just dumb, shooting arrows from 1-2 meters away to the face and remaining hidden... In fallout 4 it's much harder, and more realistic, but still doable. Just need to level up enough skills. Being able to sneak up to melee range would be OP as hell, so thats kinda reserved for the end game.

the ai in fallout isn't as dumb as it is in Skyrim. It's much more realistic. If someone has line of sight, assume they're going to see you. That said, if you're far enough away, or have skills, it's possible.

Your armor weight affects the noise you produce. Muffled armor pieces elimate the penalty for that piece.

Agility, armor weight, armor mods (shadowed and muffled), movement, LOS, sneak perks, lighting, actions, MOB facing all affect your ability to sneak.

Even maxed out AGI, perks, and a chameleon chest armor means I still get detected if I'm in a well-lit area, in front of some bad guy. Which is really as it should be. But sneaking up behind someone's pretty easy now.
