Finding a lost item
I had an awesome gun. It wasn't meant to be awesome, but it was. I ran out of ammo, so I shelved it for a while. Now I have something to fire out of it and I can't find the gun.

Searching the googles. I loaded an earlier save, checked the item name, and typed the help "item name" 4 console command to learn it's id.

It didn't work. I set a custom name for it, and that name doesn't seem to fit the item or something.

Also, what happens after I get the item id? I COULD just cheat it back into my inventory, but I'd much rather figure out where the original is (OCD? Just pedantic? Whatever, it makes a difference to me!). I vaguely remember a command for making companions come to you in skyrim. Is there a command that will take my character to the item?

update! I managed to get the item id (I think) by dropping the item on the ground in the old old old save, and then selecting it while the console was open. It comes up as 0001d9cf.

Trouble is, I can't seem to add the item with that number. The console just tells me that there isn't a matching item.
same problem. iam accidentally throw legendary item on the ground somewhere in the world at old save. And find out only now. i get the reference id of the item at old save and console command "player.moveto <refID>" really works but at the current loading! A game make the new referenceid every loading!!!
Then i try to get the same my 10-mm pistol by console: get the brand new simple one, then add to it the legendary mod, and upgrade it - doesnt work! i select the weapon by "E". open console, type "attachmod <ID>" and nothing happened! if you can make it clear - download command list and instructions:

awesome! "player.movto <refID>" works for me too. Like you though, the refID for the item changes or doesn't work.

I wonder if that's the games way of saying the item doesn't exist anymore. Like maybe I accidentally sold the item, and then the item was destroyed when the vendor got new inventory.
i make the new one by console, and add legendary mod by "attachmod <..>" - you should select item by E (long press) then open colsole, THEN SELECET BY LEFT CLICK AGAIN ON THE OPEN CONSOLE THE ITEM AND THEN type attach mod

I just found my item! I didn't see your reply until I came back to the discussion, but I thought I should post.

It started when I noticed one of my settlers holding a fatman. That's when it clicked. I've played other Bethesda games, so I'm suspicious of npc's taking my stuff. That's why I put every thing in the workshop. I only just found out the hard way that not even the workshop is safe.

Settlers will take a a gun, any gun, from anywhere. Workshops, placed containers, everywhere!

So I got my gun back. I may try out your advice for creating a second gun that's the same way, just to settle my curiosity, but I'll probably revert to a save after I see if it works or not.
