Sometimes all you need to do is stick one of those pylon things on the wall or ceiling in a house that's connected to a generator and you don't need to even string wire to get it to work. The game is weird about how power gets distributed in buildings.
Learn to love pylons when powering things in this game. Especially when building a defense grid or trying to route power through larger structures. Sometimes just sticking one nearby to something that needs power is enough, sometimes you need to run wire, and sometimes you need a specific type of pylon or connector to get the wire to hook properly.
But yes I found this too. Sometimes the lights work when attached to the ceiling, sometimes they don't.
