Is there ever a benefit to using pipe weapons?
I pretty much stopped using all pipe weapons when I finished the first minuteman quest in concord. Are there really any benefits to using them? I just scrap/sell the .38 ammo for use in (What I think are) better weapons. (Sniper over pipe, 10mm pistol over pipe pistol, etc.)

.50 cal bolt action pipe pistol, only .50 cal pistol I have ever found.

Other than that? no.

Pipe rifles can be just as strong as other guns. Just have to rechamber them to 50 cal for instance and their damage is on par with every other gun in the game and you have access to mods for them at lower levels.

Good starting weapons, imo. Lots of ammunition everywhere. And you can mod them to be pretty powerful.

Those are good early game weapons you will never run out of ammo for. That is their whole purpose and even later in the game i still tend to carry around a pipe rifle just to get rid of those pesky feral ghouls/Bloatflies/Mole Rats etc.

Not that ammo for other weapons is particulary rare but i tend to be a hoarder in video games and saving actually valuable ammo just feels good.

Armor piercing automatic pipe rifle is somewhat decent automatic weapon with the perk at the mid levels.

I see how it is a good early game weapon, though with all the .38's i find, I can just sell them for better rounds anyways. I can definately see how chambering them in .50 would make them quite good, but then, what is better, a fully upgraded .50 sniper, or pipe sniper?

Damage wise they are identical. What changes is the rate of fire mostly. However you get access to mods like supressor for a pipe rifle earlier then you do for a combat rifle or hunting rifle.

Ouch, if you change the reciever the damage would jump up so much more. I'll have to post some screenshots of my weapons tonight

Thanks for the tip, but I allready looked at that (and just double checked to be sure), but this is the most damage I can get out of it with this type of ammo.

I could upgrade it with a .45 reciever, but then it would miss it's purpose as I have so much ammo for this caliber as it is now.

I am planning to replace this weapon eventually by a downgraded .308 to a .38 to get the most damage out of my .38 ammo.

I hope to find a special .308 as base weapon for that though.

A sniper should have the highest possible damage per shot because your going to want to use that crit multiplier.

I'm not sure what you mean by a downgraded .38. 99% sure but if it fires a .308 round the damage is identical across every gun type. Same way a pipe rifle can do identical damage to hunting rifle if both are using 50 cal rounds.

Like people have already said, only benefit to pipe weapons is ammo.

There is also the benefit that you get access to advanced mods like recon scopes and supressors at lower level then those of combat rifles for instance.
