Getting Wood/Metal roof tiles to attach
build the 4 walls of the house, but for the life of me, I can't get a roof tile to attach to most of the wall sections - it always wants to connect on the outside of the house rather than inside. Does anyone else have this probelm? I've played Rust and Ark so I know how to do it just fine, and I can get some of them, but most of the time its wildly frustrating...

Sounds like you've placed the walls the wrong way round. The Settlement builder is extremely rigid and needs some serious unlocking, allowing objects to clip, disabling snap-to-object, and allowing some kind of button to raise and lower the height of objects you are placing instead of having to look around until it lands on top.

You don't get to create beautiful natural looking settlements. You get to obey the settlement building tool. It's a shame, for now.

Ah! Okay, i'll try that. Effectively, I made the walls while standing in the center and built them around me. Sounds like you're saying I need to be on the outside? Ill give it a go - just strange beause the roof pieces connect to some of the walls, but not all. Seems to have a lot of trouble covering the 90 degree pre-made pieces as well.

If you used walls with an overhang, you probably have some of them oriented wrong.

You don't need to be on the outside.

try using more floors, I tried to build a "hanging" town above sanctuary (don't do it waste of time the AI is too dumb to manage anything else than ground floor) but most of it I built using floors as base
I think but only toyed with the builder for 4-5hrs that you always need to use floors as base maybe even try to use floors as roof and add a real roof on top of them (saw someone do that in a steam broadcast)
the only other thing I learned while trying my town was to put together parts in 1 flat clear space then mass select them to move everything together..this allows you to place stuff half in the red I used it to close a wall above water near sanctuary

Look at the help file from the main menu, that will tell you what buttons to press to rotate and move objects without you moving.

If the roofs are attaching to the wrong side, then you've definitely got the walls wrong.

Just messed around with it some more, same problem. Not sure how I have the walls wrong? I start with one, and the next wall clips to the previous one no problem. I can make a perfect square with a doorway and a door, I just can't get roof tiles to connect on the inside to about 80% of the walls I place - most of them want to go on the outside like a porch awning, regardess if I flip the walls or not

I have the exact same problem, how to fix it.

you definately have the walls the wrong way. but you can fix without turning them. just remove 1 wall then replace with a prefix such as floor and roof or something, and the roof should attach on every side of that. remove/move the other walls if they get in the way. then put all the walls back and enjoy your roof. but again, it is most likey backwards walls.

No i just tested that and no matter what way i flip the wall the roof attaches to the other side like an awning.

hmm, thats weird. are you sure when you turn them around, they dont just snap back the wrong way? try testing it with just one wall off to the side somewhere

Same thing aways on the outside of the wall.

you could use the 4th from the right wall. it looks the same on both sides so it wont matter
(next to wall - end)

what you are looking for is something like 'shack second floor' or something like that, looks like a large floor tile but it is thicker and can 'snap' to top wall pieces...no small tiles can do that.
