What weapons work best with companions? Slight companion spoiler
(Summary- Are different companions better with certain weapons?)

I have all the companions excpet for danse and i was just wondering what weapons work best with them. Like i found Cait in a boxing ring fighting with her fists so i gave her a deatclaw gauntlet and i gave piper a pistol since that was her default weapon and i gave strong a super sledge since, you know, super mutant strong is strong. Buuuuuuut i was wondering if that matters at all. Do your companions have a certain set of skills and are they more effective with different types of weapons, i remember in fallout new vegas it mattered what weapons you gave your followers because i remember giving my supermutant follower a sledge and she would tear ♥♥♥♥ up, but if i gave her a assault rifle she wouldnt be as good.

I am not really sure they have any skill or perks with weapons. One would think they would have some combat perk with their default weapon but for the most part they all seem to suck no matter what they are given.

They are more efficient with weapons they're specialized in.
I mean, since Cait is great at melee, a good melee weapon HAS to increase her damage output, right?

Melee weapons. Companions are too dumb with ranged anything. Also, you need to give them ammo if you want them to use any other than their default gun (and they will use up that ammo).

Just be prepared that they will waste most of their ammo on walls.

Lastly, companions do seem to have skills and perks of their own. Interestingly enough Cait is horrible with fist weapons and does almost no damage at all from my experience. But give her a melee weapon and she's really strong. I suspect that her unarmed skill si pretty low.

Anyway, I prefer melee in most cases fro above reasons. Or companions that have their own unique weapons like robots.

I gave Strong a custom super sledge and he wrecks pretty much everything, I gave Danse a custom plasma rifle and wrecks pretty much everything, so I would assume that it matters.

I'm reasonably certain that companions do have perks related to their combat abilities, but there doesn't seem to be any information on the web or the wikis. It's possible we won't know for certain until the Creation Kit is available and we can just check the code itself.

Until then, i'm just going to keep giving my companions suitable weapons for role-playing reasons. Valentine and a .44 revolver just makes sense, you know?

I'm trying to make MacCready use a silenced rifle, but he keeps switching back to his regular noisy one. I had the same problem with Piper when I wanted to give her an upgraded 10mm. The gun item they use must have a special infinite ammo mod, which would explain why we can't take it off them and why they need to be given ammo to use another weapon of the same type as what they use by default.

I run around with Cait. i gave her a short Battle Rifle with muzzle Break and burning ammo. Found it on a legendary Deathclaw. She shreed everything in a matter of seconds. and the .45 ammo you get plenty....

I can tell you for sure that MacCready does prefer a Sniper Rifle. (probably a modded .308 Hunting Rifle with an attached scope) He expresses this when he tells you one of his stories throughout your travels together.

Here's my presonal list of weapons I believe fit the characters role, some of these being more obvious than others, all of these weapons are customized btw:

MacCready: Scoped Hunting Rifle
Valentine: Snub Nose .44 Revolver
Piper: Deliverer Handgun (Unsuppressed)
Preston: Laser Musket
Strong: Super Sledge (However I gave him an Assault Rifle because I prefer ranged fighting)
Cait: Brass Knuckles (However I gave her a Pipe Pistol for the same reason as Strong)
Curie: Laser Pistol
Deacon: Combat Rifle
Danse: Laser Rifle
Synth Courser (Forgot his name): Institute Rifle
Hancock: 10mm Handgun

I believe I got every weapon pretty spot on to the role playing aspect of each character, but I'm still not 100% sure about Deacon and Hancock. Judging from their companion perks I would say Deacon probably prefers a suppressor on his weapon, other than that I have no ideas. Please let me know, with evidence, if there is anything I missed or could have done better!

Unless it is a melee weapon, just let them use their default weapon. It saves the hassle of continuously finding ammo for them.

Deacon will use a flamer if you give him fuel, he seems to prefer it to other close ranged weapons and that is just plain fun, otherwise both he and Mac Creedy are snipers, so semi automatic rifles for them. Strong tells you a short list of what guns he can use, wish i was paying attention, like he wont equip a combat rifle, but is fine with a hunting one. curious

Curie once told me in game to make sure I bring lots of extra ammo if I am going to take Cait out. Maybe that is a clue that Cait definately does better with mele?

I gave Nick the Broadsider and modded my game so companions dont use ammo. Best thing ive done and it is great to watch.
