Why do cars explode?
I don't get it...A rusted out 200 year old vehicle that has been bombed to ♥♥♥♥ from a nucleur explosion can still blow up in a fiery balls of flames when someone fires a rocket at it.

I was adventuring and came across a legendary mister gutsy lieutenant..as he fired his minigun arm at me, my health was dropping and then bam. Car explosion gets me.

I understand it's for the special effects and to make combat a bit more "explosive" (pun intended), but doesn't this just seem a bit unrealistic given the context of the game? LOL.

they are filled with preserved nuclear engines. that's also why alot of the prewar tech still works. long lasting self effecient technology.

Hollywood nuclear engine explosion to the rescue.

The entire context of the game is entirely unrealistic. Houses would be gone, all canned food would have spoiled hard, nothing would still be running - much less possible to GET running.

Don't think too hard.

"Nuke doesn't blow up car, but missile does" - That's the issue here, heh.

I believe the other Fallout's did the same.

I don't know the reason why, but it doesn't surprise me since I have seen it before.

This. Reading some of Fallout's lore (or just using Google) helps a lot when you're new to the series.

most of the cars in-game are nuclear powered, which is why a fatman explosion happens everytime they explode, by shooting at the car, you're making it's reactor go unstable causing a huge explosion

They already got nuked though.

How exactly are these engines preserved? If they're nuclear powered, they still got ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bombed 200 years ago.

???

I'm not new to the series, I read all the lore I come across, never heard of this. Although it still doesn't make much sense in my eyes.

Magic

Bethesda wanted you to be able to blow something up

It's a game, like a movie they can do what they want.

What? lol.

I haven't heard a viable explanation for why these engines are "preserved" for 200 years after being hit by a gigantic nuclear explosion?
DjPufnStuf Nov 22, 2015 @ 7:32am
Getting hit by radiation when the are shielded to from it.(which is why you don't feel radiation when next to a car.) and shooting a leadline wall with bullets is 2 different things.

Nope. There are military canned rations that are fine for more than 500 years since they are treated with radiation to kill all bacteria.

Fusion and fission engines can be made very simple and if they are made out of stainless steal/ceramics there is nothing that goes bad by age. There are nuclear submarines that have been abandoned for 60years and are still in mint-condition. Nuclear bombs cause heat and pressure waves. A fusion/fission engine would be extremely insulated and would need a penetrating hit to actually take damage.

You have 0 clue.

Doesnt explain nuclear detonation though. Cars are still relatively preserved (some even usuable if you look at Fallout 2), yet entire buildings crumble?

Apparently nukes melt steel beams but not cars...
