Bug - Companion won't stop making workbench noise. [Permanent fix in the comments!]
(Possible spoiler.)

I am currently using Nick Valentine as my companion. Back at one of my settlements, he was using the weapons workbench while I was using the armor one. When I fast travelled out of there to work on a quest, I noticed he was still making that workbench sound (which basically just sounds like a constant clicking).

So far I have only been able to find one fix. While it does work, it is by no means permanent or very effective. I commanded Nick to use a workbench again, then commanded him to follow me just to get him off of the workbench. The noise DOES go away, but if I do anything that causes me to phase out in some way (sleeping, walking through a door, fast travelling) the noise just comes right back.

If anyone knows of a permanent fix to this, please let me know :)

I dismissed her while she was using it for extra safe measure, then immediately told her to re-follow me after she had stepped away from the workbench. The ticking had stopped.. permanently. (Using the "weaponbench" method likewise stopped the ticking, but it was temporary, and would always come back on a cell or entity update/change) This method worked not only once, but twice, due to a reloud to varify. So to wrap this jumble o' mess up, ((Take noisy ticking companion to "Diamond City - Science! Center" tell them to use the armor workbench, dismiss, then reacquire when they step away from the bench. The issue should then be completely fixed----do some fast travel/cell changing to varify)) As of now, many hours later, this appears to be a permanent fix to this issue. <3

ps. Try leaving any companions waiting outside of the "Science! Center" in the future when entering, to hopefully avoid whatever the hell this is, lol.

I would credit the person who orignally issued this idea(ironiclly in that forum, his statement/salution seemed to go completely overlooked) but I can't seem to relocate said forum, thus cannot find the post. Still, much love for you dear sire.

Oh good, I'm not the only one who got the same bug. My Nick is also making that bloody clicking noise. No idea how to fix it though. As soon as I'm done with his quest and get his perk I'll ditch him and get someone else :)

FYI that fixed itself for me on the next day (irl), so probably save/quit & reload should fix it.

FaintestVirus,

I appreciate you taking the time to reply with a solution to this bug. However, upon entering my game the bug seems to have fixed itself somehow. It was a strange thing, really. I loaded up my game to where I last saved, inside Sanctuary, and I could hear Nick's "ticking" nearby. I didn't move my own character while I thought of where I wanted to put my current companion while I took Nick on a trip to Diamond City.

While I was standing there, I saw something fall to the ground, out of thin air. About that same exact moment, Nick's ticking stopped. I walk over to the mysterious object and see that it was (without spoiling anything) a quest-item/article of clothing I thought I had previously lost to the void while trying to place it on some shelves in my house.

So who knows, maybe the game received some minor bug fixes between my gameplay from yesterday and just now.

Again, I appreciate you for sharing that solution with me. If for some reason Nick starts ticking again, I will take him to Diamond City.

Good to hear this seems to be fixing itself for some people, perhaps Bethesda did patch it to some extent with their latest update. Though it didn't auto fix for me, it's fixed now, and that's all that matters. Hopefully whatever this is irons itself out, and never resurfaces ever again, lol. In the event that it does, hopefully this method helps those inflicted.

On another note. The steam user who orignally posted this fix was "iCer". Credit where credit is due. :)

FaintestVirus, (and iCer) thank you. When I noticed I was having the click problem with Cait, I tried to restart the game. It didn't work. Then I googled it, and found this fix. I can't describe how happy I am for this fix iCer came up with. I had like 90 percent affinity with Cait (using a mod that shows the affinity). So, thank you both. :steamhappy:

You can fix it by bring glitch person to a room then wall them in. No chairs, beds or anything for them to do. Then place the workbench that makes same noise. I did this in my case it was the armor bench. Then i waited for npc to use bench if they wont stop using bench then interrupt them while they are hammering on the bench that will stop the noise. Also recommend remove all armor workbench from all settlements just place down when you need it then store it.

I thank you for this! I was finishing up a long Fallout session when this glitch occurred. My last save before it was a full hour before. Using the workbench in the marketplace Piper originally used and then canceling only temporarily delayed the issue. Going to the workbench in the science center fixed it completely. No clicking after reload, no clicking after fast travel. Never have I been so happy to not hear a person making strange clicking sounds.

Glad that this ended up helping so many. Makes taking the time to post things like this worth it <3

The solution confirmed.. Had a ticking Cait...ordered her to the workbench ,then dismissed her during work...And when she stopped working ,the sound was gone :) Credits where credits due :) GJ!!

Not going to lie... I thought it was Nick's gears and such churning.

Thank god for this - Piper has been clicking and annoying me for months! Just told her to use the armor workbench, waited until she used the 'sewing machine' portion of the workbench (which is what was making that clicking noise all this time), waited until she stopped, and told her to step away. Problem solved!

Just used this myself to fix Nick. Kept maing the sewing machine sounds.

Too bad, I guess, I got fond of calling him "two-stroke".

Doing a replay through the last few weeks and Piper starting making the noise. I dismissed her as a companion because it was impossible to have her by my side, even though I romanced her and spent a lot of time getting her cool gear and legendary weapons and such.... I will try this method and report back because I much prefer her banter to Cait obnoxious "charm". Even with the STFU and Silence Companions mod Cait still talks through the whole ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game lol

Thanks to everyone on this post you are all gentlefolk and scholars, ye all!:steamha

UPDATE: The SCience! Center workbench worked! Piper finally piped down. :P

/Edit: Okay, or maybe not. As soon as I exit the Science-Center, she starts buzzing again...
